Good Old Ohio Weather
Yesterday we woke up to temperatures in the 50’s with sunny skies. It looked like a beautiful day. I was headed over to my parent’s house to pick up Mr Chiot’s deer from the processor and was enjoying the sunshine and the warm weather. I knew bad weather was coming through, so I was planning on getting home before it got too bad!
The wind picked up about mid-day and the sleet/rain/snow moved in. I don’t really mind bad weather, unless of course I’m out and about in it. I noticed a lot of downed branches and a few trees along the road (no roads blocked entirely though). I managed to arrive home before the worst of the weather hit. About 5 pm last night Mr Chiots and I were working away in the office and we heard a huge “BOOM”. We looked out the windows and didn’t notice anything. We couldn’t see any trees on any of the neighbors homes, so we went back to work. A few minutes later we noticed the sheriff down the street.
We went down to check out what was going on and a HUGE tree had fallen across the road right down the road from our house. Fortunately it wasn’t any taller or we would have lost our electric!
Mr Chiots offered to help with the clean-up, but the local maintenance crew was already on it’s way. They brought out a big backhoe to clean up all the debris.
These gusts of wind up to 50 mph make me a bit nervous. Most weather doesn’t bother me, but since our home is surrounded by massive trees, the windy weather can be a bit nerve-wracking. Of course this is why we have insurance, but it would still be a bit of a pain to have a big tree come crashing through your roof, especially on a cold rainy winter day!
This is one of the reasons we’re prepared for emergencies. Back-up heat, cash on hand, food in the pantry, we’re ready for the electric to be out for a few days or to be snowed in for a week or two. Such is life in semi-rural Ohio. That’s why Ohioan’s say, “If you don’t like the weather, wait 5 minutes.”
Any crazy weather happening in your neck of the woods?

So glad you were not hit! You are smart to have back up. What about a generator? I need to get one too.

We don’t have a generator, we have plans to purchase one though. My brother-in-law has one we borrowed last time the lights were out for a few days to keep the freezer going.

not really. just typical early winter doings. chilly then warm.. snow then rainy.
the soil hasn’t frozen yet. it’s been consistently cold enough that it might happen earlier that normal. i usually gauge it by whether i can dig a hole for the balled and burlap spruce tree used for christmas. .. still dig-able; so far.

I hate when I lose a tree. Our last one we lost was pretty close to the house. Yesterday we had some really wild weather too in the Boston area. It started raining in the middle of the night. Then it froze over and snowed a good six inches. Then it switched to rain again and started thundering.

They say the same thing in Michigan.
We had similar weather yesterday then dropped into the deep freeze. Its 12 this morning with heavy winds.
Hoping the roads aren’t as trecherous as they look.

Glad it didn’t knock out your power! I think that saying about the weather pretty much works anywhere, we say it here in TN too. ;) Looks like good firewood though or mulch!
Winds were high yesterday here too. Weather reported 40 mph gusts which made what could have been a pleasant day into a cold one.

Yes, I may go down later today and gather some to pile in the back. It looks like great wood to pile around for the woodpeckers & other birds.

Crazy weather indeed! The temps here for the last three days have been much colder than normal. Daily lows have been 15F, 14F and 15F this morning. It is the first time that we have lived here (8+ years) that our water has frozen at night. This is in an area where the temps rarely get below freezing.
Our children were WALKING ON our swimming pool with four inches of solid ice under them yesterday! Should be much thicker today!
You will see photos on our Flickr stream soon.
Must be “global warming” :)

Haha! Michigander’s have the same “wait 5 minutes” saying. I think every state says that.

Nothing to crazy this year. Last year we had an ice storm and lost the power for a while. We were not prepared at all. Thank God for good neighbors.
You reminded me, we really need to get our emergency supplies ready.

Ever since last years wind storm off of Leo I cannot hardly stand to hear the wind blow. So I hated the wind yesterday and today. Glad you did not loose your electricity. Ours keep blinking.

Glad you’re ok. My husband would have beat the city crews there, with his chainsaw ready to start harvesting firewood :-)

Here’s the crazy weather happening this very minute in the San Joaquin Valley of California – there’s this water falling from the sky. Some call it “rain”. I have a foggy recollection of this substance from a long, long time ago. I hope to learn more.
Received the beautiful calendar. I’m thrilled. Thank you. Thank you. I hope to be able to post about it soon.

I’m glad you made it home safely, and the fallen tree didn’t do a lot of damage. It is good to be prepared. We were snowed in for a couple days this week. We actually were off of work for 3 days. My husband helped a number of people either get unstuck, or to get their vehicles dug out. I was glad we had gotten lots of groceries before the snow.

Had a seriously cold streak in October of 30 below zero! That was unseasonably cold, not for the winter but for October. It was wild as we were down to -36 for almost a week then over the course of 48 hours we popped up to 28 above zero! Crazy!! We are now back down below zero but that is pretty normal this time of year for the interior of Alaska!
