The Day After

December 26th, 2009

I hope all of you who celebrate had a wonderful Christmas yesterday! Mr Chiots and I keep Christmas Day for ourselves, just us two, it’s our family day. For the past 8 years we’ve watched vintage James Bond movies all day. We usually get up and have a big breakfast, yesterday we had french toast. We celebrated by having an extra cup of coffee! We decided to play some video games instead of watching Bond. I’m sure most people don’t think of me as a video game player, but I spent the afternoon with Mr Chiots playing Diablo II. My video game self is much different than my real self, I’m currently a level 34 Barbarian, I wield a maul instead of a shovel.

We finished the evening off with dinner and a movie. Dinner was a delicious local meal of venison pot roast, from Mr Chiot’s own deer, with potatoes from the garden, carrots and onions from the farmer’s market. The movie was The Soloist, which was great. We enjoyed a simple day at home and it was lovely.

How did you spend Christmas day?

good morning !! it was uneventful this year. no gatherings to attend.. i love to party and it just didn’t happen. stayed home, listened to the radio, played go on-line with a friend, and helped with a stopped-up sink. took the dogs for a run at the fairgrounds; there were many visiting dogs so the joyous collection of puppy madness was six-fold. turkey soup with crocodile bread, fresh butter; eggnog and absinthe were the beverages of choice. happy new year to you both!

Our family decided it would be fun to play with the four of us together. We are currently installing a game and we will all make characters and play together. We have all four computers moved into the family room so we can talk. We aren’t playing Diablo though, but Runes of Magic (a free game since we are only going to play while the kids are home from college.

With all my children and my wife in a warm cozy house (we turned the heat up a little) having a fine Christmas dinner, giving some great gifts, making some calls.

It is some of the smaller things that make it special here. Its really the only day of the year that the wife and I can ignore our Blackberries (kinda ignore, at least), and this year it was the first time our son “got it” and understood that there was something special happening. Always fun.

Like you, we have traditionally made Christmas our “do not travel or host large affairs” holiday. It’s about our immediate family and indulging in one day that is just about hanging out, eating, and playing like children (no matter what our age!).

Ate breakfast while we opened our stockings and listened to traditional Christmas carols. Then we opened presents and proceeded to spend the rest of the day playing with all the new items. Our daughter got several new Wii games including Guitar Hero – which we then all had to join in and play too! We use our Wii alot on holidays as it is a lot of fun and all of us can participate. Fixed a full on turkey dinner for the Christmas day feast. All in all – it was a lovely, play filled day!

Not much into games these days, but when I need a break I play Regnum Online. It is something similar to World of Warcraft, although Regnum is FREE to play.

We keep Christmas day low key too. Just us and the animals for the most part. We opened stockings and gifts {yes the dogs and cat too} while it was still dark. I love sitting in the living room with the tree lights on and the wood stove warm. Then quiche for breakfast. The day was cold and sunny so we went for a horseback ride, which was lovely. Then a simple dinner of local lamb chops, broccoli salad and red wine. Watched a dvd and then got all the snacks out and had some friends over to play pinochle Christmas night. It was a wonderful day!

We like to lay low on the holiday too. The kids woke at 5am to see what their stokings were filled with then patiently waited for their Papa to come home from work at 7 am for the rest. Cooked a meal for an elderly couple down the road and delivered just before lunch time then cooked our own. Had a few relatives and friends stop by but no offical gatherings like the weekend before. Just enjoyed the peace of the day.

Dishes. Cooking. Presents with immediate family. More dishes. More cooking. A very large extended family gathering at an aunt’s house. Then a 15 mile drive home in the pouring rain.

I slept really well last night.

Oh, I miss playing Diablo II! I lost my install discs a while ago, and after my previous hard drive self-destructed, I had no way of getting the game back and playing again. If I have any spare money soon, I’m sorely tempted to buy myself a new copy of the game, since it provided me countless hours of entertainment.

Do you play any other online games like that? Ragnarok Online, for example? Private servers are often free and a lot of fun!

I think you can get them pretty cheap from Amazon used. We have the expansion pack and playing the new levels for the first time yesterday. We also like to play Caesar III, which is really fun but in a completely different way! We pretty much just stick to those games. We start new characters and work our way up again.
