Quote of the Day: Little House on the Prairie

January 17th, 2010

“Now Pa carefully took the nails one by one from his mouth, and with ringing blows of the hammer he drove them into the slab. It was much quicker than drilling holes and whittling pegs and driving them into the holes. But every now and then a nail sprang away from the tough oak when the hammer hit it, and if Pa was not holding it firmly, it went sailing through the air.

Then Mary and Laura watched it fall and they searched in the grass till they found it. Sometimes it was bent. Then Pa carefully pounded it straight again. It would never do to lose or waste a nail.”

Laura Ingalls Wilder, Little House on the Prairie

I loved reading as a kid with Little House and the Narnia series being my favorites. Every couple years I read through the The Chronicles of Narnia. I’m reading through the Little House on the Prairie Series this winter. I find myself being amazed at her description of how nothing was wasted, truly a lesson we could stand to relearn. I’m sure I notice different things reading them as an adult that I did as a girl.

What were your favorite books as a kid?

Most definitely the Little House Series…I am reading it aloud to Sweet Girl, we are in the middle of the Long Winter. She wants to be Laura Ingalls…so did I as a little girl, sometimes still do! Kim

I loved the Little House series as a girl too, especially being from Missouri and being able to got to Mansfield. I can’t wait to share it with my daughter who is now 3 and be able to take her there also.

However, my favorite book of all time as a girl was “The Secret Garden” by Frances Hodgson Burnett and I still love it just as much today.

Hmmmm….I am going to have to say ‘Encyclopedia Brown.’ I had several of the original books which were published mid-1960’s. They all had illustrated front covers that were shades of brown, rust and terra-cotta. The pages were textured and I can still remember the smell of the lignin and resin of the pages after being broken down by time-infused acid. Now that is a memory that gives me peace in almost all situations.

I also loved how each book was self-contained. You never had to red the one before to know what was happening. He was so intelligent. So inquisitive. Yet so awkward. WOW. I am definitely going to find some of those books now.

I haven’t read Little House, but it sounds like something I would find interesting. It’s amazing how different life was for people generations back.

Me, too! We all love spending time with the Ingalls. Even my husband enjoys Little House on the Prairie. I long for a simpler life for my family. We are moving in that direction, but it isn’t easy. I think that’s the point.

Little Women, Little Men, and Jo’s Boys by Louisa May Alcott
The Betsy, Tacy, Tibb series by Maude Hart Lovelace (Although I found them delightfully “old fashioned” they were written about girls of my grandmother’s generation)
Island of the Blue Dolphin by Scott O’Dell
    R. A. Heinlein’s science fiction stories. Actually, ANY Science fiction … but I don’t remember many of the titles and I went on to love Heinlein’s adult stuff too.
Loved the Narnia series. The Wizard of Oz stories.
I didn’t discover The Little House on the Prairie series until I read them to my daughters, but loved them then. I learned about them first from the TV series.
