All Things Purple

January 24th, 2010

When I started gardening I wanted a lot of white blooms in the garden. All of the things I planted that first ended up blooming purple instead. I don’t mind now, it seems like all these attract so many beneficial insects.

I think my favorite purple flower is the liatris, I love the tall structure they have. They’re so interesting.

Although coming in a close second are petunias. I love hanging baskets filled with white and purple petunias.

What’s your favorite purple flower?

I’ve always loved purple. Some favorite flowers include deep purple crocus, jackmanii clematis and platycodon[balloon flower]. Although sometimes balloon flower can look bluer, there are times in my garden it’s more on the purple side. Used to grow a dahlia that was scintilattingly purple.

Purple is my favorite color. I always see many things purple in gardens and I find them beautiful. Recently I noticed some sort of ornamental cabbage that was a rich purple with huge leaves, that looked very interesting (and I don’t eat cabbage).

Purple beautyberries–yes the fruit part…purple orchids, the liatris is beautiful, too. Mostly because of the butterflies it brings!

Stunning! All that purple makes me yearn for spring. It’s one of my favorite garden colors, too. Purple petunias are the best! So easy to grow.

Purple Liatris and purple Coneflower are both favorites of mine. I like a splash of yellow and red in a bed with lots of purple. The contrast really makes the purple “pop” out.

I’ve always been a fan of lilac, which grows is such abundance around my area that you know the good weather has finally arrived when all you can smell on the air is the sweet scent of lilac.

Purple is my most favourite colour! I love purple hydrangeas and purple pansies! I often think when I have a daughter I will call her Violet!

Bearded Iris are my favourite purple. Before I knew there were different types of iris (oh how naive I was about gardening!) I bought a big bag of irises – Siberian – and planted them in the garden, eagerly awaiting the big, beautiful irises I imagined. Sadly, they weren’t what I expected, but are still a lovely thing to see in the spring. This year, for Mother’s day (I always get plants/shrubs for M-day), I’m going to get specific and ask for Bearded Irises and Tiger Lilies (my 2nd favourite flower).

Liatris is one of my favorites too, the birds really like their seeds in the fall/winter months as well. The allium picture is very nice. I really like them yet have never planted any… must go on the to do list.

I’m also fond of purple. Interesting, but it was just yesterday that I was looking through the seed catalogs (yes, I’m planning to plant “flowers” this year for the first time) and thought that it’d be nice to have some purple in the mix, particularly as a butterfly attractor. Your images give me lots of ideas.
