All Things Red

January 26th, 2010

I saved red for last because I must admit, I don’t like red in the garden, at least red flowers. I don’t think there’s a red bloom anywhere in my gardens. The one lone red flower in the collage below is at Stan Hywet in Akron.

Red vegetables on the other hand are wonderful. I love having a garden full of big red tomatoes, apples and radishes, shiny red peppers and juicy red strawberries. When it comes to vegetables red is a tasty color!

What’s your favorite red fruit or vegetable?

It’s hard to choose just one fruit or vegetable in the red family. I’m a huge fan of red fruits, flowers, and vegetables. Strawberries would be my first choice in fruits and little red potatoes in the vegetable world. I could make a meal of just those two selections…but then there’s red raspberries, rhubarb, and so many tomatoes…nope I’m sticking with my first selections.

I really like red flowers in small numbers popping up in all of that green; scarlet runner bean plants and trailing nasturtiums always look so sweet.

I’m not so much of a fan of red in the garden either, I think because I feel it is too common!

I do, however, adore red delicious apples (a very very very rare find here) all the way from Washington!

Yup, I don’t care for red flowers in my garden either. But red tomatoes, mmmmmmmmm. Love to pop the cherry tomatoes into my mouth straight from the vine. But red doesn’t appear in my garden otherwise.

ooh, tomatoes! Love them even when they are not red, but I would give my left arm for a warm fresh from the garden juicy tomato right now!

I’ve so enjoyed your collages this week. I’m ready for all the color that comes with spring. The warmth. The dirt. I, too gravitate toward purples and yellows. Mostly prairie flowers actually. I did purchase some red zinnia seeds this year. I’m stretching my palate a little. :)

The natural response is tomatoes, of course. How can one not love fresh, garden tomatoes? However, last year I learned how beautiful beets can be in the garden. Their green leaves with lovely red spines and the mound of flesh heaving out of the soil. Nothing else is that lovely, dark red colour. I’m also partial to rhubarb, flavour-wise. A bowl of sugar and a rhubarb stalk and I’m a happy girl (again).

Garden fresh tomato. Nothing can top a great tomato, although strawberries come pretty close.

I just love your photos. Very pretty posts on color.

What an excellent collage! I’m gonna try a few new red veggies this year- a red meat radish- (the outside is white and the inside is red!) and also some red okra. I’m a little hesitant about the okra because it’s really a Southern thing and i’m in NY, but maybe if I start it in the greenhouse?

I started to type “tomatoes!”, then realized I love strawberries, too. THEN I remembered how much I love cherries…do I have to pick one?

Love the little Elmo heads! Red is not my favorite for flowers either, but give me a good tomato and I’m all over that! Kim

Wow, why are we all hating on red flowers?!? You can’t tell me you all wouldn’t let out a gasp if you came upon a large stand of cardinal flower in bloom or red beebalm! Of course there’s nothing like a dead ripe, warm from the sun, fresh picked tomato or strawberry! I NEED SUMMER!
