Quote of the Day: Rand B. Lee

April 18th, 2010

Needless to say, a five by five foot plot of sweet corn is not going to feed many people for very long. But that is not why urban backyard gardeners create such things.

They create such things to remind themselves that once the world was a soil world, a bee world, a bird world and a seed world, not the concrete thing it has become.

Rand B. Lee (Pleasures of the Cottage Garden)

We live in a technology saturated society surrounded by flat images. So often we spend our time looking at photos or watching movies instead of getting out and enjoying the real thing. I garden because I like to step away from my computer and get out into the soil, bird, bee and seed world.

Do you garden to help balance out the concrete world we live in?

Gardening is so peaceful compared to my working day. A chance to take in some sunshine, breath fresh air, and comfort the eyes with green.

I spy an adorable little bee-girl! Gardening makes me happy. I love to drench myself in nature. Lose myself in it. Sometimes I feel like I could walk out the back door and never turn back.

PS-Have you read Maine Farm? You’d love it..

I haven’t read it, I’ll have to add that to my “to read” list. Thanks for the recommendation!

Among other reasons. We visited the concrete world yesterday–an outlet mall, to be specific–and the experience was so unpleasant it made me not want to leave the property ever again. I will NEVER understand why people actually choose to spend their time off using shopping as a form of entertainment. Awful.

Most definitely. I garden because I love to eat and eat well – and I want to stay connected with the world around me. Have an active role in producing my own food and drink in the experience of being a part of a greater community of life forms and elements that comprise our world.

    Why I garden:
    1. I really, really enjoy it.
    2. It really, really tastes good.
    3. I know where my produce was grown.
    4. It’s nice to be independent.
    5. The cost of a pack of seeds is such a minimal investment for such a wonderful payoff.

its very true. days and days of doing nothing but starting at computer screens and at other bored people staring at me (in meetings) the only thing that makes me feel human is waking up relatively early and sitting in my garden for a few minutes before work each day. not only does it make me feel human, i think it keeps me sane..

My home is my haven from that world in more ways than one. I call it “stealth house” as it looks pretty much like any other ex-Council house in the area, but it is run quite differently than most in that regard. I teach my son about compassion, empathy, and responsibility. The more he grows and wants to grow, the more tempted he is to eat foods he normally would never touch. And the more inclined I am to just stay home and chill or go to the local market to shop rather than the big, bustling, rather depressing supermarkets with their packaged E-number food.

I live about 2hrs from the closest concrete jungle, and that’s too close at times (jungle dwellers regularly escape to my area). I have no need to escape where I live (except the weekly “escape the kids” grocery trip). I do escape, though, when I go out several times a day (still cooool here) to escape… what? Reality? Housework? Stress? Mechanical sounds? Who knows. But I do it. It isn’t the *reason* I garden, but it’s one of the reasons why I’m glad I *do* garden.
