Do You See What I See?
This past weekend we had some storms roll through our area. I decided it would be wise to tie up the tomato plants to make sure none of them would blow over with the high winds. While tying them up I noticed that a few of them had tiny blooms forming!
I don’t know about you, but the first tomato blossom is really exciting around here. So far the plants I’ve noticed blooms on are: Constoluto Genovese, Principe Borghese, Pompeii, and Zapotec Pleated.
Any tomatoes blooming in your garden?

I’m in the middle of tomato harvest down here. I’m trying to beat the blossom end rot before it takes over the tomato. If I pick it when it just starts to turn striped on the top, I can get a tomato that stays whole without rotten parts. If I wait till the slightest blush of pink to pick it, the tomato will have rot on it.
Let’s just say, it’s not a happy tomato season in my house. But I did learn a valuable lesson, test your soil and keep your garden water evenly!

I’m in Stamford, CT and thanks to the Kozy Coat Wall of Water teepees, I spotted my first two tomatoes. One each on Sungold and Stupice.
I only had enough teepees to cover half my tomatoes, the covered plants are bigger and had flowers first, but now they all have flowers.
I just tied one up this morning before work and I can still smell tomato on my skin.
I love this time of year!

We’ve already harvested 2 small tomatoes from a container at work. They are many green maters in my big garden…oh I love this time of year!

Certainly cause for celebration, Suzy! Yay! I’m on the verge of harvesting *many* homestead tomatoes (they’re still green) and all of my plants now have blooms. Rose, Cherokee Purple, Brandywine, Green Zebra, Gold Medal, and Jubilee Yellow. Happiness!!!

Tomato blossoms, a sure sign of summer. We have blossoms on our Dragon Spring, Beaver Lodge Plum, Organic Varigated and Cherry. I even saw a small green tomato last night on the varigated. I am over anxious for the tomatoes, even the locally grown hydroponic tomatoes we have been getting have no flavor compared to our garden tomatoes.

We have little flowers and tomatoes all over the place. I planted Red Fig and Yellow Pear and I started the seeds late but I am very happy and have been going out daily to check them and fuss over them as well as the rest of the garden.
The funny thing is I have 3 Roma coming up in the compost that are doing quite well. They have blooms and one even has little tomatoes on it, that is how I figured out what kind they were. We canned 6, 5 gallon buckets of them last year and the skins and seeds went to the chickens. That in turn later went into the compost as we cleaned the chicken yard and house. There were many more that have popped up but these 3 were out of the way and I wanted to see what they would do.

Yes! It’s so exciting! Since noticing my Stupice starting to bud, my Taxi, Cherokee Purple (which is odd considering it’s the only tomato that never does well for me… but I keep trying), Sylvan Guame, and Chocolate Stripes are all starting to form little buds. Considering most of them look pretty bad due to the rains we’ve been having (CONSTANT rains) it’s an extremely welcome ray of hope.

The recent heat has made the tomatoes grow like mad. I pruned a bit and strung the rest. Every variety has tomatoes.

I’m not sure if we have any blooms just yet on the tomatoes. Our tomatillos, ground cherries, and wonder berries are blooming, though.

YES! all 24 of my tomato plants are blooming, and quite a few have tiny baby tomatos too. The first tomato is a big deal around here.
We too have had a lot of rain here.. (central Indiana) and cool temps, but, that hasnt stopped the garden… everything is blooming… now if only the bees would show up.

Not quite yet. I am anticipating blooms on the Principe Borghese I planted at your recommendation. Can’t wait for sun-dried tomatoes!

Yes! We are growing tomato plants upside down from buckets suspended outside our kitchen window so I can admire them in the morning as I enjoy my coffee. The plants are in bloom and we have green fruit on the vines.

Yep, mine have buds just like that! First time I’ve grown tomatoes since I was a kid in my parents’ garden, so I’m excited!

…Congrat’s! I know the feeling when you get your first tomato bloom, you want to announce it to the world! I mean, stand in the middle of your garden, open your arms to the heavens, and proclaim, “we have a blossom people!”…lol ;o)
…We actually have a small tomato on one of our Early Girls, it’s about the size of a golf ball now…cool, eh? :o)
…Blessings… :o)

We have little baby tomatoes already…but with all this horrible cold wet weather I’m not convinced they will ever have a chance to ripen…sigh. Kim

We’ve got flowers too! I’m excited (and not a little nervous) about the prospects. The tomatoes are much stronger this year but last year the whole crop was struck with blight and we didn’t get a single fruit! I hope this year is different.

I live in SC and have “teaser tomatoes” on all 4 varieties. As a newbie gardener, I of course cannot wait until I can start eating them! I debated about to how to support them and in the end went with 6 foot stakes. They are all almost to the top and I don’t know what will happen when they grow beyond that point. Is there some sort of supplemental support system you would recommend? I’m only 5’1 and don’t feel like dragging my ladder out to harvest tomatoes :)

Thank goodness it is a bloom! For a second there I had a panic you were going to say BLIGHT. We’ve had a ton of rain.. you too I bet..
Wishing you a mountain of tomatoes.. xo

YES! We’ve got oodles of blossoms on our ‘Tomaccio’ plants and even a fairly good-sized tomato on our ‘Black Krim!’ I think it’s going to be a good tomato year, unlike last year!
