Lucy is Loved

June 23rd, 2010

Lucy, the namesake of the gardens, is quite a loved chiots. Her cousins (our nieces & nephew) think she’s the greatest dog in the world. They love it when we take her to grandma & grandpa’s (my parents) for a family get together.

The kids have always had Lucy around, Hannah, our oldest niece was just a baby when we got Lucy. They’re almost the same age.

When Lucy got injured, she wasn’t able to visit the kids very much and she still doesn’t go with us every time we visit like she used to. They miss her and she misses them. Every time I talk to one of the kids they ask about Lucy and how she’s doing. Last week when we were at my parents our niece Heidi gave me this note to give to Lucy. How sweet is this? We hung it on the fridge at Lucy’s level so she could see it.

Lucy is a great dog around kids, gentle and fun. She lets them dress her up and she has a great time playing with them. How fun it must be to grow up with a dog like Lucy!

I have fond memories of all of our pets growing up, and I’m sure the kids will always have fond memories of Lucy.

Do you have any fond memories of specific family pets?

Lucy looks like a terrific dog to have around children. Pets really become part of the family don’t they. I had a collie dog named Lassie when I was about four until maybe seven, I loved that dog. Sadly he died and I haven’t had a connection to a dog like that since, but I love my cats.

Oh Gosh! Where to begin? Among the wonderful critters I’ve shared a home or my room with the most memorable were: Boomer, an English bulldog with a face the size of a silver serving platter, Petry, a very mean little iguana and now, Occy, a rescue pup and the dog-love of my life. You can see a photo of him in my folks’ pool on my site’s homepage now.

We lost a family dog, Sherman, last summer. It was a terrible loss for our family. Sherman would have been 14. He was found by my sister in a school parking lot when he was a tiny pup. Little did we know that he would become a 90 lb. Rhodesian Ridgeback mix who was the most gentle, loving dog we ever had. The silver lining is that we got Maisy, our little beagle, last December. She helped us through some family losses in January and February. Maisy was born the same month that Sherman died, so in a way I feel like she is a bit of a reincarnation of our Sherman. Dogs are so much a part of the family and they provide us with unconditional love. We are so lucky to have our new pup. My niece and nephews weren’t use to having our pup around at first but they are used to her now and ask to walk her on the leash in the yard, so this is the next generation of dog lovers, I hope!
