I Must Do This Again Next Year

October 9th, 2010

Remember how I dressed up the garage window with my collection of flowerpots filled with a variety of begonias? They did really well all summer, I only had to water them once a week or so, even with all the hot weather. I’m thinking I may need to move the shelf a little lower as the plants got a little taller than expected. The one on the end got too big for it’s pot and flopped over.

I’ll definitely be doing this again next summer since I loved it so much and it was quite easy to take care of. I’ll be trying some smaller begonias or moving the shelf down.

Do you have any annuals you use each year in your garden? Anything you do from year to year to dress up your garden or home?

Annuals I grow every year? Yes, Black-eyed Susan vines! On almost every balcony I had since 1997. And partly because of their name. Do you have any? ;-)

Morning Glories. I train them up the permanent trellis we have for our cucs and tomatoes and they make lovely arches of green and flowers. We tried a new, pink mix this year and they bloomed earlier (and died back earlier) than the blues so between the two we’ve got a long season of flowers going.

I’ve thought about using Black-Eye Susan vines, too.

Spanish Brocade Marigolds made it to the top of my list this year. I planted some in with the tomatoes and peppers. Once the veggies started really taking off the marigolds kind of disappeared and I thought “oh, well, not worth it again because I can’t see them”. I was wrong…when the veggies were done and we pulled them I was left with these big beautiful marigolds that have done great in our cool fall weather. It’s nice to see their blast of colour when I thought the garden was winding down.

I plant periwinkles every year. They do great here in the hot summers and even reseed themselves for second generation plants in one season. When those come up, in go the pansies to hopefully make it through the winter.

Angel wing’s are my favorite flowers and if you bring it inside, it will last you all winter (and get REALLY big next spring). I had one that was nearly 8 ft tall (from my floor to the cealing) in my dining room at one point and the beautiful thing would have those stunning pink flowers on it each and every spring. (just in case yours didn’t come with tags, that is the one on the left).

Beautiful project! I would do it again too! (It is too rainy for begonias where I live. :( )

I’m so glad I saw this picture… this is a wonderful idea. I have a garage window that is now exposed to the light due to the loss of my elm trees a few weeks ago. It looks so bare and empty now and it’s time for some landscaping and flowers. In the spring that is.
