My Mom’s New Greenhouse
On Thursday Mr Chiots and I headed over to my parents house to help my mom & dad put together my mom’s new sun shed. My mom spent quite a while trying to decide what kind of greenhouse to buy and finally settled on a sun shed from cedarshed.com. It’s half greenhouse half shed. It’s made out of cedar, complete with a partial cedar shake roof.
My dad spent a few weeks putting in a gravel pad to install it on while at it he installed a rain barrel overflow for future rain barrel installation on the greenhouse. We helped them raise the shed and put most of it together, except for the polycarbonate panels. It’s a 12×12 shed with about 70% of the roof being clear.
It’s quite a nice little greenhouse. You’ll be seeing more of it as we use it this coming spring for seedlings and garden plants. I’ve always wanted a greenhouse, although I think I would lean more towards a traditional glasshouse type greenhouse (here’s a gallery of a few I made on Flickr). If I keep saving my pennies I may have one in a couple years.
Do you have a greenhouse? Have you always wanted a greenhouse in your garden?

I used to have a 10×12 greenhouse-and I loved it so. Of course, it wasn’t big enough-they never ever are! I started out with this size because I wasn’t sure I’d use it that much.
Wow-how naive I was back then!!!
:D
We haven’t had time at our new place to put one up yet but I’m sure hoping for another one.
And take my word for it–build as BIG as you can afford! You will NEVER regret that!

That is a link to our little green house. It isn’t much but we make-due with it. We hope to have a real green house someday soon.

Actually, I just got a greenhouse from Lowes that was originally 100 dollars and because it wasw the floor sample we got it for 40 it is pretty big, and it is plastic.

I’ve always wanted a greenhouse or a conservatory. I really like the cedar ones like your mom got. That type would go with my house as I’ve a cedar shake cottage, but I think like you I would prefer an old fashioned greenhouse. I’ll eventually get small greenhouse put in, I hope…

I have a 14 x 18 greenhouse for the orchids. It’s not so much for the cold weather but to provide shade and humidity to the orchids in the summer. In winter my cats love to take naps in there and their favorite sport is to knock the pots off the benches.

Wow, I’m so jealous – I would love one of those!

My movable chicken coop is made from hooped cattle panels. I’m thinking of building a permanent one and turning the coop into a greenhouse.

A friend said if we moved the 12×24 greenhouse off her property, we could have it. This is my first year using it, and so far I’m very pleased. It has helped to extend our growing season – I live at 3000 feet in high desert so it is freezing mid to end of May and again mid to end of September.

We love our greenhouse. It makes a huge different in the cool Pacific Northwest. You can see info about it here.

No need for a greenhouse here; but there are some very nice ones out there. Your parents seem to have a great one.

That sunhouse looks really nice. One day, we’ll replace our 60-year-old falling-down garage with a greenhouse, garden shed, chicken-coop, bicycle and winter-tire storage, barbecue shelter. The plans are slowly forming in my head, while we save up the money to build it. We’ve got about 20′ by 15′ of space available and need to hide the coop from the city inspectors, which I’m expecting to be our biggest challenge.

I’ve seen this shed before, it’s gorgeous!!!!
Yes, dream of having a greenhouse. Although I love this one, I would go for the more traditional one, just because it gives more room for plants. How exciting!

I too wish I could have a green house with a potting area included. However space is an issue as well as a little thing called cost. I just wish for now that I could erect something to go over the garden, but in Texas wind is a big issue and if it is not concreted down it will fly away. Nice greeenhouse/shed.

Hello,
I was wondering if you could tell me how your Mom likes her greenhouse now. Is she happy with it? Would she purchase it again?
I have a “hoophouse” that I enjoy and would like to “upgrade” :)
Also, did she heat hers this winter and if she did, how?
Thanks so much!!
Happy gardening,
Andrea
