Friday Favorite: the Feline Edition

November 5th, 2010

It’s not secret that we’re cat lovers here at Chiot’s Run (at least I am, perhaps I shouldn’t lump Mr Chiots into the “crazy cat lady” group with me). If you’ve been reading this blog for a while you’ll know that we have indoor cats and outdoor cats and have a soft spot in our hearts for these furry friends.

We have Soafie (gray) and Samson (orange), which are brother and sister that we rescued 6-7 years ago from a feral cat rescue in Cincinnati, OH. They’re indoor cats that have never lived outdoors. Soafie is the princess and rules over all the other pets in the house. Samson is the quintessential orange cat, a lover that can never have too much attention.

Dexter showed up on our doorstep two years ago in November. After unsuccessfully trying to find his owners, we had him fixed and welcomed him into the family. He quickly found a place in our hearts, he’s a chatty fat cat with a personality as big as he is.

The newest additions to our growing list of furry friends are the garage cats of course. If you remember, we had a feral cat coming around last winter. We started feeding her because she was looking a little scrawny and a little rough around the edges.

This summer she moved her kittens into our garage and was coined “Miss Mama”. After a series of unfortunate events, only one survived. She was coined “Little Softie” and has been a great addition to the gardens. It sure is fun watching her scamper around chasing leaves and acorns. Here she’s eating the bone meal I made for my garlic.

Cats definitely bring much joy into our lives. Lucy does as well of course, after all she’s the namesake of the garden, but I’m more of a cat person than a dog person. Besides, Lucy can have her own Friday Favorite some day.

Some day we hope to have a larger piece of land so we can add some chickens, sheep, perhaps a donkey and maybe even my dream pet, a Scottish Highland cow. Until then we’ll practice with all the cats.

What’s your favorite pet? Do you have a dream pet?

we’re a family of house cats too :o)
I couldn’t imagine life without them and the scratched furniture and pestering for food at meal times is worth it for all the cat cuddles and each of their funny little ways. They’re all napping at the moment which is super cute (one on the bed, one under the kitchen table and one on the jumpers in the bottom of my wardrobe)

I just love the photo’s. Such contentment in those faces. But, I do think you need at least 3 more to be considered “the crazy cat lady”.

We’re a cat family. I’ve got my 21-year-old Maine Coon lookalike, Clarence, who was born on my bathroom floor. And I’ve got my sweet Kitty, Karma, who was found as a stray about 10 years ago. They are my sweet, sweet babies.

Now, my dream pets are chickens and rabbits! I want so desperately to get more land so I can have them. They wouldn’t be for eating, just eggs, compost and snuggling. :-)

…Oh this post is priceless! So sweet, so cute, so heartwarming! Thanks for that… :o)

…’Dexter’ is a doll! Actually all of ’em are… We have two cats that we just love to pieces. Both are rescues, one is ‘Gabe’ and the other is a runt that loves to love and her name is ‘Poot’. We also have three dogs, all rescues. One is a schnoodle named ‘Salty’ that was going to be let loose in the pasture and shot because the owner was tired of having to have her groomed. The other two are a choc’ lab named ‘Maggy’ and a yellow lab’ named ‘Sunny’, both were left behind when our neighbors home foreclosed and they fled and left everything behind – including their dogs. Stupid people. :o\

…That photo of ‘Lil’ Softie’ eating your bonemeal made me laugh out loud. lol…

    …Enjoy your weekend and blessings too… :o)

…Oh! And I too dream of one day owning a horse and a dairy cow. :o)

Dogs all the way. I could definitely do without the cats, and everything else falls under the Not Pets category (i.ec. Potential Food Source).

There’s a farm right down the road that has Scottish Highland cattle. I used to see them when I ran. They are pretty awesome.

What lovely photos, I especially love that second one with the cds. We have two orange cats (just adopted one earlier this week, Apollo, I think shelter animals are the best!)

Ideal pet? I’m a big dog person though we don’t have one (our landlord is most certainly not a dog person.) I’d love a crow but am against keeping wild animals as pets… I love love love miniature donkeys. Someday, I will have one.

I am most definitely a cat lady. I am very lucky to have a guy who loves cats as much as I do, as well. I have four: Khitomer (who can open levered doors by herself), Cat5 (who I just call “kitties”), BooBoo (aka Boobgrabber), and Spot (most recently dubbed “Pillow Cat” because she sleeps on my pillow day and night). They’re my babies.

Oh, we love our kitties! :)

Mac is 5-1/2 & Jazz is 4. They both stay indoors (tho they would love to go out) & are our joy & a source of much laughter. They love to play.

I tried to feed some feral cats for a while, but it created more problems. I’ve not seen them around, so i assume that they have moved on & the food i provided was enough to get them thru a rough time.

We do feed the squirrels, and so enjoy watching them too.

Wow, you’ve got some cats! They probably keep down all the mice and such, eh?

i love cats and dogs though currently i’m a two cat household having lost one cat a few years ago and my dog this past august. the one pet i’ve always wanted was an irish wolfhound. a breeder told me not to have one if i had pet cats, they apparently will chase anything that runs! :)

I just love those photos. I wish I could keep a cat or two myself. But my landlord wouldn’t allow it, I lack the space and for a few years now I get an allergic reaction to at least some cats… :-/

Mr Chiots used to get an allergic reaction to cats, but he seemed to get over it.

Your cats are so beautiful. I think Dexter eats for two cats. In my heart I think I’m a dog person but I ended up with a whole bunch of cats. I love them all. I stopped telling people how many cats I have because I’ve seen people recoil a little at the info.

Oh yes, people raised an eyebrow at us when we got cat #3, now we have #4 & #5, at least people don’t think of outdoor cats the same as indoor pets in the numbers.
