Cat Antics

November 13th, 2010

The weather has been super nice recently so I’ve been spending my afternoons working in the garden. While I’m outside, I’ve been letting Dexter spend some time outside. He’s supposed to stay on the front porch, but occasionally he sneaks off. Yesterday evening, I was mulching the front hillside and looked up to check on Dexter. I didn’t see him on the porch and then I noticed he was in the maple tree in the front yard.

It was quite funny, luckily I had my camera so I could take some photos for Mr Chiots (who happened to be off walking the dog at the time). I was worried Dexter would get stuck in the tree since he’s not the smallest most nimble cat in the world, but I guess he used to climb trees before he showed up on our doorstep.

At one point I was afraid he was going to fall out of the tree, but he managed to get down, not very gracefully though. At least I didn’t have to call the fire department, do people really do that?

It was quite a sight, I got a good laugh out of it as did Mr Chiots when we saw the photos (hope you do as well). When he got out of the tree he collapsed on the porch as little Softie looked on. Little Softie seems to LOVE Dexter. Every time she sees him she runs right up to him.

I don’t know why animals can be so funny, perhaps it’s their lack of expression, or that they don’t get embarrassed. We love that the cats provide such comic relief around here, and Dexter seems to be the comic of the group.

Any great things that made you smile this week? Do your pets keep you entertained?

Those are great pictures! So funny :-)

Our cat Lipton used to do a few things to keep us entertained, too. For one, she would sit on the high arm of our couch, next to the entry into our dining room/kitchen. At first, I thought I was hallucinating – I swore she was smacking me on the butt sometimes when I would walk by. Then, one day, one of her claws got snagged on my shirt, and she was busted! We laughed so hard; her pride was obviously wounded, too, but after we trimmed her claws, she was right back at it. This is definitely one of our favorite memories of her ;-)

He still has 10 pounds to do to rival Goeffrey – amazing isn’t it – especially since Dexter looks so big!

    do chickens count?

when I let our chickens out to “range” in the backyard eventually they all come to our back sliding door like dogs wanting let in. It really is quite funny.

…Oh these are too cute! :o)

…Yes, pets do provide lots o’ entertainment and that is just one of the many reasons I love ’em so… Just yesterday I gotta tickle out of our Yellow Lab named, “Sunny”. She was sitting out by our pond, just gazing across the pond as if she was contemplating world peace or somethin’…lol And there isn’t a day that goes by that our cats don’t make me laugh! :o)

…Thanks for sharing and enjoy your weekend!

    …Blessings too… :o)

    Oh, i enjoyed these!

We can’t let our cats, Mac, out because the one who was a stray thinks he is street smart! He’ll go tomcatting around for a couple of days before coming home. (Yeah, he is fixed.) We have dogs, coyotes, raccoons, & bear in the neighborhood. He did get out once & was chased by something. He crawled under our deck so deeply trying to escape that he got stuck. We had to take up part of the deck to get him out.

Our younger one, Jazz, loves Mac too.

Our cats DO get embarrassed, tho. If they fall or jump weird or do something they didn’t plan, and they see us watching or laughing, they will sit down & lick their paws as if they are saying, “That was not me. That was some other cat you saw”! We do love watching them. :)

I’m not sure if they actually get embarrassed or are just indignant that we were watching! Mine will do that paw licking thing and glance over at me as if to say “I totally meant to do that.”

Haha you can tell Dexter’s roving days are over. He’s an indoor cat now.

Oh, I don’t know about cats not getting embarrassed! We went
past a half-full skip today and surprised a black and white cat who was just surfacing from a bin bag, licking his chops. He looked soooo embarrassed at being caught!

One of my previous cats was a rescue who wanted _nothing_ to do with the outdoor world. In fact if you were holding her and walked too close to a door that lead outside she would panic and climb over your shoulder to run and hide in the back bedroom.

I never let my cats out. Much too dangerous. The street we live on is way too busy and we have hawks that patrol the area. This is the only place I’ve ever lived that doesn’t have feral cats. In fact, in spite of the fact that we have 1 acre of “wild” behind our house that is full of squirrels and bunnies they are rarely seen in the open areas of the garden. Squirrels never raid my birdfeeders for fear of being hawk food. Occasionally my birdfeeders have become hawk feeders! I have to remind myself it all a part of nature. But I lost one precious kitty to the hawks and its hard to look on them with favor any more.

There’s a rumor in our city that firemen don’t respond to cat-in-tree calls anymore…I totally get blowing it off in favor of a fire, but if there’s nothing going on, c’mon!

Ever catch the movie Pleasantville? Love when Toby Maguire’s trying to get the firemen to come to the fire in his front yard….and he finally has to yell “cat!”

My wife and I are traveling in Europe right now and about a month ago we stayed in a hostel in the south of the Turkey with the fattest cat I have ever seen. I wish I had a picture!

Your blog post also got me thinking about my family dog, who passed away last month. We’ll miss him (photo – http://www.smilinggardener.com/organic-pest-control/how-to-keep-dogs-out-of-flower-beds), but we’re happy he was at our wedding this summer.
