Indoor Holiday Decor

December 11th, 2010

After picking up our tree on Tuesday, we pulled out the bins of holiday decor from the basement and set about decorating the inside of our home for Christmas. I’m partial to natural decor inside just like I am outside. I usually stick to white lights, glass balls, pine cones, and a few strings of glass beads when it comes to trimming the tree. Here’s a peek at the holidays inside the cottage at Chiot’s Run.

I made some mixed pine garland from those pine boughs we got at the Christmas tree farm and put it over the sliding glass door in the dining room. I simply love these little mica tree silhouette lights I got a long time ago, they are handled gingerly and strung up around the house each year. I had so much fresh pine left that I even put it on the light fixtures.

Of course the best part is the way the lights warm the house at night. We put our tree lights on a dimmer so we can dim them if we want to. I always love looking at them all squinty eyed to make them blurry.

Last year we didn’t put any Christmas decorations up in the house except for some of my nativity sets. Mr Chiots was very sad and said this year he wanted it really festive. I think we’ve achieved that, he’s very happy.

How do you decorate the inside of your home during the holidays? Do you go all out, or do it simply? (if you’ve posted about it on your blog, add a link below, I’d love to see it)

Your decorations look lovely. Things are pretty sparse around here in the decoration department. In years past this time of year was always super busy for me doing arts shows & I found the decorations would stay up until I had a break in shows (sometime around April) so I got out of the habit of really decorating. Last year it was the first big Christmas since we moved to Texas & we went all out with the decorations. We had family visiting & it was nice to have things out & around us. This year I have 2 decorations inside & a pine cone wreath out front. Sincerely, Emily

I bought a few original strands and needed more. Luckily I found glass bead collections on clearance one year and was able to make a long strand to fill in. I really really love them.

we go all out… the main part of the house is pretty…. lots of white lights & family heirlooms (ornaments, nativity, etc)
our game room/family room is way over decorated… super cheesy! my husband collects antique coke machines, etc so we go around that 50’s theme… and end with the infamous “leg lamp” :)

I’ll have to come see it sometime. We have a friend that has a basement with tin signs, etc and they have a crazy tree down there with a little old 50’s kind of village underneath – super cute. Ah the leg lamp.

I’m of the “less is more” philosophy. Modern decorations would look really ridiculous in our old, old house with all the antiques, so I use a lot of greenery, candles, and glass ornaments. It usually looks like this: http://going-country.blogspot.com/2009/12/betcha-cant-guess-what-i-did-yesterday.html

Except this year I didn’t get all the greenery cut before it snowed, so I don’t have so much of that up in the dining room. And we haven’t yet got our tree yet. I’m running a little behind this year. I can’t imagine why (CUBBY).

Typically we go all out. All. Out.
This year with a new puppy our energy is wiped out and we’re keeping it simple.

I too have a new puppy, 9 weeks today. They do suck the energy out of you. Potty breaks at 2AM in single digit temps has lost its charm but 10 weeks is magic for sleeping through.

I can see how a puppy can put a damper on the energy, I remember when the Chiots was a puppy. I don’t look forward to going through that again!

That’s the most beautiful tree topper. I never use one because they’re usually so ugly.

I agree with you, it’s difficult to find a pretty tree topper. Ours is actually a glass Moroccan lamp that you can hang from the ceiling (comes with a long chain) you put a candle in it. We simply took the chain off, wired it to the top of the tree, and strategically placed a large C7 bulb behind it.

Your home is so lovely and unique at Christmas time! My decorations never thrill me much, but then again I have so little time to concentrate on them since I started working retail. It seems to destroy my holiday spirit! Plus I sing in three different choirs, and all of them put on holiday shows of some kind, so my life is not my own this time of year. Maybe some day I’ll concentrate more on the holidays like I did when the kids were little.
