Friday Favorites: a Puzzle and Winners

December 24th, 2010

Yesterday afternoon I cleared off the dining room table and spread out a puzzle. I’m a big fan of puzzles, Mr Chiots and I usually work one around Christmas and maybe a couple more during the winter months if we have enough time. We usually spread it out on the table and work on it a little each day until it’s finished, we got the edges finished last night.

I don’t buy new puzzles very often, we have a few that we rotate through. This Monet one is one of my favorites, it’s quite a challenge. I prefer to get Ravensburger as they’re great quality, the pieces fit together very well, and you can work them over and over. Someday I’d LOVE to do this 10000 piece puzzle. Of course I would need to build a special table just to fit the finished puzzle, not to mention all the pieces.

It seems like people either love doing puzzles or they don’t. I’m definitely a puzzle person, I LOVE it.

Do you enjoy doing puzzles or do they frustrate you?

I also picked the winners for Miranda’s soap and the Ethel Gloves. Winners randomly chose by Random.org. Drum roll……..

Kim won the soap from The Relic Jar.

And our winners for the Ethel Gloves are:

#7 – Karen
#37 – Dawn from Gardening in Slippers
#66 – Michelle
#82 – Carla
#110 – Emily from A Pinch of Something Nice

If you didn’t receive my e-mail last night send me a note through the contact form in the sidebar.

Yay, Ravensburger! They are the best, definitely. I like to do a puzzle once a while, but I prefer to do it with my sisters and unfortunately we don’t see each other much, living in seperate cities. So there’s been some time since we last did one.

By the way: Merry Christmas! :-)

I love doing puxxles but it’s so hard to break it up after completing it and put it back in the box! I don’t have nearly enough room to hang them all up. I haven’t done a puzzle in years. Maybe it’s time…

Since the family grew up and moved far away, not much puzzling goes on at my house any more. During the hayday of family yearly festivities we always had a puzzle table going. It’s been many years ago that I’ve worked on a real puzzle. Oh, yeah, my six year old grandson likes to puzzle with 25 and 50 piece puzzles but that’s about it for me. I once worked on a 6000 piece puzzle in my younger days. After three months of daily work, I threw up my hands and gave it away vowing never to work another puzzle in my life. Well, I changed my mind later but never have I gone with that many pieces again.

    Have a great puzzle day.

I love puzzles! My mom and I used to do them all the time when I was younger. I haven’t done one in years. I should pick one up and work on it. It’s the perfect winter activity!

My mother would go out and buy some 50,000 piece monster of a puzzle with lots of intricacies like ‘the signing of the Declaration of Independence” (lots of faces), or some forest (lots of tree parts), or pictures with lots of sky in them, and even a tulip farm picture and one of Big Ben. She’d get these on purpose, because they usually only took one or two to get through a winter, and it was a special occasion: she’d drag out and set up the card table and chairs right in the middle of the living room, and they were a game anyone could play, and everyone already knew how.

Even people stopping by for a visit would try their hand at a few pieces…

It was the greatest invention ever to keep bored kids who were trapped inside by weather from just exploding! Too bad we can’t find those kinds of puzzles any more.

Today, we find that anything can be treated like a puzzle: Lincoln Logs, Tinker Toys, Legos, building blocks, anything where the pieces have to be put together some way to form a whole–whether it’s the RIGHT whole is something different. Does it matter, though, as long as the journey is just as satisfying?

I love puzzles! I used to put them together, then glue them together. I had all these puzzles with nothing to do with them. I finally had one nicely framed and it hangs in my living room…but mostly I just put them together and take them apart. I tend to do them in the winter too like you. I like doing the 1,000 piece puzzles. I tend to enjoy anything with flowers, fairies, wizards and trees.

I used to sit in my room and do puzzles for hours as a kid. I haven’t done as many as an adult, I am too busy knitting. :P

My mom loves doing large puzzles. She uses cookie sheets as overflow for the loose pieces that won’t fit on her table. This strategy seems to work well as long as the table is big enough to hold the finished puzzle!

We often enjoy puzzles during the winter, too. It was a favorite in childhood as well. I love the idea above in the comments for using cookie sheets to store extra pieces. Merry Christmas!

I like puzzles. In fact I started laughing when I saw what your post was about… I just started a puzzle this morning and did a post about it. I might even love puzzles, I am not sure yet. I do feel a bit of an addition to it already, just can’t quite walk away, want to get just one more piece in place. I have not worked a puzzle in years and this is so much fun. I am not familiar with the puzzle maker names – you mentioned Ravensburger – good to know. I couldn’t find the dimensions listed on the 10,000 puzzle link so I can’t even fathom what that size might be. It sounds so ominous! For now I will just borrow puzzles from my neighbors stash and enjoy them. Merry Christmas. Emily

Have you tried Springbok puzzles? They’ve been around forever and have the best designs/pictures on them. And the pieces are nice and thick and actually stick together when you move big chunks around. I remember staying up late as a kid, hunkered down in my room with the lights on low, working on puzzle after puzzle. I once did a puzzle of a puzzle…now that was a HARD one!
