Quote of the Day: Lope de Vega

January 23rd, 2011

“With a few flowers in my garden, half a dozen pictures and some books, I live without envy.”
Lope de Vega

Gardening really does help cultivate the simple life, at least for me. I don’t think many things ground you as much as growing a few flowers and vegetables in a little bit of soil. I find I’d rather be out in the garden than doing just about anything else. It truly has helped me live without envy, I’m too busy gardening!

What has gardening helped cultivate in your life? patience? happiness? contentment?

Gardening soothes my soul. It just seems like the right thing to do. It gives me physical activity, produce to eat, and some to share with neighbors and friends. It keeps my mind active planning, expanding, and improving each year. I couldn’t imagine living without gardening.

    Have a great garden day.

Gardening and small-scale farming have provided me with amazing multitasking and planning skills. It calms me to have my hands in the earth, and gives me a great (and necessary) outlet for my neurotic and occasionally manic tendencies.
The best thing I’ve noticed is that gardening seems to have helped me get over the winter doldrums. Before I grew things, I spent all winter desperately looking forward to spring, and sun and warmth and green and that was it. Now I spend the winter planning and preparing for spring and it’s this activity that helps me stay focused and positive. Sometimes when spring finally does arrive, I find that I’m still not totally prepared. That lack of preparation is what will then get me through the next year’s winter…

Gardening calms me down, takes away my anxieties. It makes me feel strong and capable. When I’m working in the field, I’m not afraid of the things that normally plague my mind. Growing vegetables in particular makes me feel secure and full of gratitude.

I started container gardening because I was getting restless. Although I had a hectic schedule, I didn’t feel like I was “doing” anything. As soon as the first sprouts broke through a sense of accomplishment, peace and contentment washed over me! I used to love winter(though I still like it), I find myself getting irritated because I can’t grow anything yet. :-)
