Chiot’s Run On Ice

February 2nd, 2011

No doubt many of you experienced the same ice storm that we had Monday night. We woke up to a bejeweled landscape, everything was dripping with frozen crystals. I couldn’t wait for the sun to come up so I could head out and take some photos. I bundled up, put on my boots and headed out until my fingers were frozen. I think one of them may end up on the 2012 Chiot’s Run calendar.

Ice storms are probably the worst winter weather we get here in NE Ohio, snowstorms make can make life difficult, but with ice things often shut down. Yesterday all the local schools and colleges were closed. Fortunately we didn’t lose electric as we often do during ice storms. (Yep we lost electric, I’m at at Muggswigz my favorite coffee shop in Canton checking e-mail and doing a little work.) This ice is rough on the plants as well, often breaking branches off trees. My trumpet vine still hasn’t bounced back from an ice storm we had 2 years ago. We’ll see how long it takes us to thaw out from this weather.

What’s the worst kind of weather you get where you live? Did you get any ice or snow from this current system?

    Love your photos.
Yes, ice is the worst. The Ice Storm of 1998 was very devastating. Over 75% of the state of ME was without power for times lasting from a few days to weeks. Snow is easy.
Coastal ME is looking at up to 2 feet when the storm finally exits over the Maritimes on top of the 2+ feet on the ground already. The big problem is where to put it.

We here in Nebraska started out with a quarter inche of ice covering everything, then snow (about 8 inches) on top of that. Then we were really blessed with 40 mph wind they blew the snow into drifts and the temperature was -20+. I think the blizzard of February is finally over but the schools are still closed today. Perhaps things will begin to get back to normal tomorrow.

Have a great winter day…. if you can.

Wow, amazing pictures – thanks for posting — and I do hope you’re keeping warm and safe.

In the UK, we don’t really get crazy extremes – the winters aren’t too cold and the summers aren’t too hot. Well, they weren’t – the winters are getting colder each year now and the summers not necessarily hotter but wetter. This winter we had six weeks of snow from the end of November – which is very unusual. My mum & dad live on the sea-breeze-warmed coast and during my entire childhood, we only had one winter where snow as more than an inch or two, and temperatures were rarely less than -1C or -2C (30F) — this year, they had 18″ of snow overnight one night and temperatures were about -17C (1F) — quite a change! Right now, it’s fairly mild in the UK – but apparently another cold spell is around the corner — just when I want to be getting started with my early sowing…

We didi not get the snow but we got the bitter cold and way below zero temps and windchills here in Nebraska.
We will thaw out just in time for another round of cold again.
    Sending warmth to your way.

Stunning photos! We got hit by the ice storm as well — about a 1/2″ of ice topped by about 2-3″ of sleet / snow. Our Big City is shut down — two days running. It’s nice to know that we’re bundled up inside, with a toasty fire, and a well stocked pantry. I’m not sure I’ve seen a windchill of 0* here before! I know that’s not that cold for many of you “northerly folks”, but man it’s cold for us in the SW. Brrr!

Wow, you did get ice. It is hard to believe that we live in the same sate looking at the pictures. We got very little ice here in the Hocking Hills parks area. What we did get melted with the rains. It does make for beautiful pictures but near impossible to get around in. The berries look so pretty with their ice coats. I really like the image of the birdhouse. It is beautiful and a little lonely looking for some reason at the same time.Stay safe.

You definitely have ice. Here in North Central Missouri we got a small amount of ice covered by about 2 foot of snow and blowing winds at about 35 miles and hour. Airports closed, interstates closed and snow drifts that are DEEP! Stay safe : )

Here in the Sacramento Valley of Northern California we get flooding…and we’re due for another big event. We’re surrounded by levee’s that have been declared extremely unsafe by the Army Corps. of Engineers…we upped our flood insurance and bought a Just-In-Case boat! : )

Our entire city is on ice. All events cancelled and husband home from work. I’m just glad we still have power. Love that picture with the birdhouse, definitely use that one in the calendar.

I know ice is very hard on the trees, plants, and electrical lines, but this is so beautiful!

And the composition of your photos is stunning. I don’t comment often, but have to let you know how much i appreciate your beautiful photos and all that you share.

Please don’t hate me. I live in Southern California. The weather has been mid 60’s but we did have a couple of weeks of 70’s to low 80’s. Just enough to throw all my fruit trees off and make them think of budding. Now we have the Santa Ana winds. Think of gale force winds for DAYS!! Single digit humidity so your skin and lips are chapped and itchy. My chickens better not face tail into the wind or they will be featherless. But most of the year it is beautiful

We get hurricanes. That’s definitely our worst.

Supposedly it’s going to snow Thurs – Fri. And we’re having 5 straight nights of lows in the low 20’s. That is unheard of for Houston. During the days it’s only getting above freezing (by a few degrees) for a couple hours.

Beautiful pics. The worst part of the storm here was listening to the ice as it fell from the roof and trees when the temp rose a little. (we did have one limb come down and gouge the side of the cabin-nothing major). The ice storm a few years ago was worse. We laid here in the dark listening to the trees crack and fall in the woods around us. I really would rather have snow. So would my dog, since footing for her this morning was a bit dicey when she needed to do her thing!

The worst weather here would be blowing dust. The storm of 1977 was a doozy.

We had the ice as well! My parent’s grew up in Louisville, Ohio and I was just in Canton, Ohio on Sunday, January 30, 2011 for a Romanian dinner at the Romanian Catholic Church.

These may be some of my all-time favorite photos of yours! So gorgeous.

As far as nasty weather, we get Santa Ana winds here in Southern California. They are extremely obnoxious mostly, but can turn very dangerous if paired with wildfire season.
