Quote of the Day: Thomas Jefferson

March 13th, 2011

“I had rather be shut up in a very modest cottage with my books, my family, and a few old friends dining on simple bacon, and letting the world roll on as it liked, than to occupy the most splendid post, which any human power can give.”

Thomas Jefferson, letter of February 1788

I was thinking about this quote yesterday while I was working inside. It was a beautiful day, I couldn’t work outside because I was busy finished up another batch of maple syrup. That didn’t stop me from enjoying being indoors. I love our little house, it’s perfect. After living here for 9 years it’s finally feeling like home.

My living room is one of my favorite rooms on a bright winter day. The walls are light green, they reflect the light beautifully. The curtains are white and let the light through the large windows. The sofa and chairs are comfy, perfect for reading.

What’s your favorite room in your house?

Lovely post! I like my spare room. It’s my spring planting room. It shas a huge south facing window with no overhand. I have put a big shelf int he window for seeds and seedlings. This is where I sit and plant my early veggies and flowers indoors and grow them in the window until they can go into the greenhouse and cold frame end of April. I love sitting in that room with growing things and playing in the dirt when I can see at least a foot of snow outside!

My living room is my favorite. When I bought my house, the place needed a lot of work and the living room is where I started. I refinished the hardwood floors, and painted the walls, trim, and even the ceiling (my ceiling is ice blue, very cool). This room has a ton of windows (including a bay window), so it also happens to be where the majority of my houseplants live.

I love my formal dining room. My house was build in 1923: it’s a Craftman and I’ve been in love with it since I first saw it when I was 6. My family and I were driving south on old highway 99 to Sacramento and I saw this beautiful house next to the road…I said: “Daddy, someday I’m going to buy that house.” My dad laughed and said:”Play your cards right and you’ll just do that.” Sixteen years later I went on a blind date with the grandson of the home’s owner (I had no idea)…we married and were given the house: I guess I played my cards right: that was 35 years ago. The house has 3 dining rooms…but the formal one has the the built-in hutch, massive amounts of crown moulding (painted robin’s egg blue) and a huge fireplace with hand thrown Arts and Crafts tiles. We also have the dining room set that was a wedding present to my husband’s grandparents…a beautiful room.

Your home sounds lovely. I have a friend that would certainly love it since she loves craftsman homes.

This has always been one of my all time favorite quotes. My kitchen is my most favorite room.

I love all my rooms at different times.
Do you use the sewing machine shown in the first photo?

I do not. It needs a few belts, but I believe it does work. It was my great grandmother’s sewing machine and still has her needles, scraps of fabric and notions in the drawers. Here’s a post I did about it and you can see what’s in the drawers.

My big hobby is patchwork and quilting – always by machine. Mostly I use, nearly every day, my grandmothers treadle machine. It is in super working order still with the original instruction book and a pack of needles.
It is a Jones Family CS bought in about 1932 and looks very similar to yours. the main problem now is finding spools which exactly fit. Near by there is a sewing machine repair workshop which deals with machines from all over France so they have lots of very old spares. There is a wonderful museum attached to it as well.
I didn’t see your original post about your machine as I had not found your site then.
Keep up the good work I love your photos and post
