Soaking up the Sun

April 16th, 2011

The last couple days have been fabulous as far as weather is concerned – sunny, not too warm, a nice breeze. I’ve been spending my days making new garden areas in the new lot. I spent all day yesterday at my mom’s planting potatoes, peas, and onions in her garden. As a result, I’m tired, really really tired. Too tired to think of anything creative to say and too tired to download all my photos and process them for a blog post. So instead I leave you with a few photos of our resident fatty cat Dexter enjoying the weather.

Have you been able to spend some quality time out in the garden this spring?

It’s amazing to me that you never skip a day writing with all that you do. I can definately relate to being dog tired after a long day working outside. It is the best kind of tired though. Thanks for working so hard on this blog all the time. I read it every day for a little bit of inspiration.

Susy, I spent quality time outside in the yard and garden all last week. All the beds are now ready to plant. I’ve planted onions, radishes, and lettuce. I’ve started working on outside summer projects. It has been a lovely week. Thursday the gentle April showers started and carried through all of yesterday. After it dries up a bit I can get my potatoes planted. It was wonderful rain that come just at the right time to avoid a super dry spring beginning. Hopefully I will be back at the outside projects again next week. Of course I always have to run the backyard fence line to grub out the new tree sprouts that come from bird poo while sitting on the fence. Most of them are mulberry trees that grow like weeds here in Nebraska.

All the tulip trees are in full bloom here. The crab apple trees are also in full bloom. The spring flowers (tulips, daffodils, etc.) have been in bloom for at least a week now. With highs in the 60s during the day, it has been a most glorious spring here so far.

Have a great spring garden day.

I spent 4 hours in the yard yesterday as well. I divided an oregano into 10 divisions to move to my new herb garden in the front yard. It will hopefully make a nice border. I also planted my corn! I love corn planting time- it means I’m almost done with most of the spring planting down south here. Just need to get my peppers, eggplant and edamame in!

A few weeks ago we had beautiful weather so I was able to get the garden tilled and prepped for plants and seeds. I’m glad I got it done, because the weather here has been lousy for the past two weeks. I’m hoping to get out there and plant in the next week or so.

I am in love with these pictures! So much cuteness! I’m glad you have been enjoying such beautiful weather. It’s already well into the 90s here, but over the past few days it has been rainy and cloudy, which is very rare and only happens maybe…5 or so times a year. So, I’m soaking up the clouds, actually! It’s a nice change of pace.

What a soft looking kitty! No time spent in the garden yet, woke up yet again this morning to a dumping of snow. When will spring ever come to Alberta!!

Probably about the same time spring actually takes hold in Maine. I think we’re getting snow tonight.

I spent time lifting the straw mulch off the garlic that hadn’t made it through yet. I did the same with the Rhubarb. If we could have a few warm days I might be able to find enough to make a small pie for my boys on Easter. I also spread some of the bunny litter into areas that hadn’t gotten any and pulled the 4ft. tall kale stalks from last fall. Oh for some warm days to get rid of the rest of the snow and warm the soil a bit.

Oh Dexter looks quite content and happy in your great photos. I have been spending lots of time outside. We are already into the 80’s & 90’s here in So. TX. Some days are just too hot. I work a bit, go in and rest, out to work again…follow that pattern. The early mornings can be cool & great or temperate and humid and there is no rain in sight. Lots of veggies up and growing well. Lots of flowers up and attracting lots of bees and birds. I have more flower seeds planted and hope those come up soon. There is always something to do. There are areas that still need my attention to I can plant in them later this year or next. Have a wonderful weekend. Emily
