On the Cover

May 4th, 2011

I opened my mailbox last week to find the newest issue of Horticulture Magazine. This issue is special because it has my photo of a Dr Wyche’s heirloom tomatoes on the front cover! This image first appeared on my blog back in 2009, it’s my last tomato harvest of the season.

They contacted me about using one of my images a few months ago. They were going to use this image for the article on the inside, but then decided it made a great cover for their special edibles issue. It’s quite funny to see my name and blog in print inside the magazine! It’s quite exciting that people are starting to use my images in their magazines, it certainly help pay the bills associated with my blog. Since I don’t want to have ads on my blog I need to find a way to pay the bills associated with it.

I’m quite happy to see that Horticulture is doing a special issue on edible gardening. It is an area that is becoming more and more popular. I think it’s important for everyone to grow even just a few edible things in their gardens.

I’m especially happy that the article my photos were used for was about heirloom vegetables, something I’m passionate about. I love that a magazine like Horticulture is covering this topic. I hope it encourages a few more gardeners to give heirloom vegetable gardening a try.

I usually get all my magazines from the local library as I don’t subscribe to them. I really enjoy reading Horticulture, Mother Earth News, Grit, and Hobby Farms.

Do you have any great magazines you enjoy reading?

Congratulations!! That is way cool. It is a beautiful pict.ure I could see why they would want to use it. And my husband laughs when I take a picture of my tomatoes. I also love to encourage new gardeners to grow veggies. I planted way too many seeds this year and have about 100 basil plant (3 varieties). and 75 tomatoes.I grow them all in a south window without a grow light and they do great. I can only fit about 12 of each in my garden so I love to give them away to my co-workers and friends. I always make sure I give them some intsructions when I give my babies away. I want to make sure they are going to good homes hahaha. Keep up the great work!

From reading your blog, I’ve been taking photos this year of my garden, not artistic like you :) but just to watch the growth and development as it progresses. I’ve even taken photos of when it rains so I can see where the garden is too low/high for later design guides. It’s been amazing to look back on it and really helpful.

Your pics are VERY well done and really have an artists touch! Congratulations on being on the cover!

I like to read all garden magazines, Mother Earth News, Hobby Farms, I may try this one (Horticulture) too. We have a Half Price Books in the area, so I purchase a lot of magazines from them. It also gives me an opportunity to try different ones before subscribing. Even Martha Stewart Living has been offering organic guides for gardening that I’m enjoying.

To keep from having stacks of magazines, I copy the pertinent articles that I want to keep and put them into a three ring binder by category so that I have a reference guide of sorts. Then I share the magazine with other garden-loving friends.

Very cool! Congrats! I’ve received Horticulture in the past but went with Fine Gardening and Organic Gardening this year. I’m thinking of cutting even those back since all they seem to do is create clutter. I love reading them but time is fleeting these days.

Congratulations!! That is SO awesome…it looks beautiful!

I love Mother Earth News…and so does my husband! It’s the one magazine we BOTH enjoy…so it’s the ONE we subscribe to. All others I get from the library…I save a ton of money that way!

Now THAT is an issue of “Horticulture” I might actually read. And not just because your beautiful photos are featured (yay!), but because the main reason I don’t read that magazine is because most of it is about non-edible plants, which I am totally not into. But I think the MiL actually does get “Horticulture,” so I’ll look out for it this month.

She also gets the New Yorker, American Scholar, and Newsweek, none of which I look at much. And A. gets “Sheep!” (with an exclamation point, yes) magazine. I don’t subscribe to anything myself. I feel like we have enough reading material sitting around.

Beautiful photo! I’ve been photographing my heirloom garden for years but never thought about having a magazine use them from my blog. Hmmm…. Did they just come across your blog/photo or did you have another connection? Just curious…

    My favorite magazines are:
    Countryside and small stock journal
For its information on all things sustainable and homesteading.
    Mary Jane’s Farm
For it’s exceptional design, photographs and organic information
    Cooks
For great, tested recipes to use my heirloom produce and pastured meats

    Ones I want:
    Organic Gardening
    Horticulture
    Heirloom Gardening

    Thanks for the wonderful blog!

Congrats on your photo! That’s quite an accomplishment.

I used to read Mother Earth News, but I got tired of all the articles on farm equipment, straw bale homes, and stuff I’l probably never do.

Congats on your just lovely photo on the front cover, you do have a wonderful eye for taking photos.

I like Mother Earth and Grit but I also really enjoy the Canadian Magazine Small Farms.

After I am done reading it, I will put a sticky note half folded over with a one or two word note on area’s I believe I would use again and then keep them in holders, so when you look though them, you can see which one to pull in regards to what topic, for me at least this makes them much more useful.

Congrats! I love that photo. Now what really struck me is how long I’ve been reading your blog! Every morning I sip my coffee, read your posts and enjoy your beautiful photos. Sometimes I am treated to your posts on more than one blog.
I subscribe to Mary Jane’s Farm and have joined the farm girls. It is like Girl scouts for big girls. I have more fun with the service projects than the magazine.

Do your Violets have a perfume to them? I have violets spreading around the yard, not sure how they started but they are lovely and my chickens like to eat them. Sadly, I they don’t seem to have a perfume to the flowers.

They do have a bit of a fragrance but it’s hard to smell when you’re outside. When you have a half gallon of them in the kitchen you can smell them.
