Friday Favorite: Rubber Boots

May 13th, 2011

This spring I finally broke down and bought a pair of rubber boots and I couldn’t be happier. I’ve been considering buying some for a few years, but just never did it until a few months ago. Now that I have a pair I can’t imagine ever not having them, so I’m picking them for my Friday Favorite this week!

They’ve come in so handy during our super wet spring. I can slip them on and off easily for a quick trip out to the compost pile or to harvest greens for dinner. They’re also great for trekking around in the snow with some knee-high wool socks underneath. I’m looking forward to having them for my winter gardening efforts. I’d highly recommend getting some rubber boots if you don’t have a pair!

Do you wear wellies around the garden?

OH YES. My love for my Tingleys has been well-documented. Can’t live at Blackrock without knee-high rubber boots. Period.

I sure do! I bought a pair last winter for gardening. I’ve used them a lot this spring since it has been sooo wet. I will probably need them this afternoon!

Everyday! They are great for providing protection from the wetness, little ankle- biting bugs, and piercing blackberry thorns!

Love them! Those are very cute! I can’t believe I actually lived a whole year in Scotland without a pair of wellies! Time to get me some!

They’re great for the Seattle wet, but I had to stop wearing them when I realized the lack of support was making my bunions ache. Now it’s tennis shoes with orthotics. Not as great in the rain, and really makes me feel sexy.

I bought a really good pair of wellies last autumn. I ummed and aahed for a long time about whether to get another cheap “fashion” pair or to spend more (three times as much!) for a set of “farmers” ones – and I’m glad I did the latter. I *lived* in them last winter.

Not only did they keep my feet dry, they stopped my always-too-long jeans from “puddle soaking” whenever I went out to check on the chickens or for a dog walk.

Love my rubber boots! In fact I have multiple pairs – Bogs for gardening & work around the yard, steel toe rubber boots for work (forestry), & insulated rubber boots for the winter ice fishing season.

I don’t know how I gardened before I had my rubber boots. My husband bought me a pair of BOGS for Christmas, and I highly recommend them; they’re comfortable and waterproof. Great Friday favorite!

Had to buy a pair of real deal knee high rubber woodsman boots for work last year and use them at home more than at work! I wear them for mowing, chopping wood, and sloshing around in the rain. When I’m working in my flower beds or garden, I wear my Chaco sandals. They’re the next best thing to being barefoot. (I can’t go barefoot b/c I have highly productive gumball trees all over my property. Ouch!)

I don’t…but have been considering getting something specifically for the garden. Flip flops just don’t cut it in the garden! I was thinking about Crocs…even though they’re hideous. But maybe I’ll go the boot route…maybe it’ll encourage me to garden in the winter, too!

    Your boots sure are cute!

YES! Love them! I bought a super cool pair about a year ago (white with tattoo-ish red thorny roses on them) and I use them in the garden, on rainy days, in the chicken pen, and they will come in handy when we get our pigs soon too.

Anyone have rubber boots with good support inside? Because I’m with Kelly above – if I’m actually working out there, I need to have good strength around my feet! I also use a retired pair of tennis shoes, and have a pair of clogs for when I’m doing a quick switch between my house shoes and the garden for checking on the need for irrigation, setting up a sunscreen for my seedlings, etc. I got a check from my parents for my birthday – I asked for rubber boots or a couple of voice lessons to work my upper octave skills – but I’m thinking that boots just won’t cut it for me…

Christina, Why not just buy a pair of insoles to slip into your favorite rubber boots? Maybe those new Dr. Scholl’s orthotics?

I couldn’t live without my rubber boots especially living on a farm! I also some pretty purple muck boots that aren’t for farm chores though and I have some bogs as well.

Ooo, I love my boots! Hubby and I both have XtraTuf boots (his and hers!) and I wear them to death. Of course, we have a cattle farm and we live in wet Western Washington, so boots are must most months of the year. (In the summer, when things are dry, I “graduate” to cheapo plastic faux Crocs and/or bare feet…except around cow patties.)

Yes, I have some nice boots I got in Panama (they called them tikko boots) for exploring the jungle. I now use them for gardening, snowblowing and chicken coop cleaning.

I don’t have boots but I do wear Muck shoes in the garden, bunny hutch area and chicken yard. In the fall, I may invest in a pair of Muck boots which would be helpful in the winter.

I do have a pair of Muck boots, if those count. Though at this point, they’re more shoes than boots, because the dog got scared during a thunderstorm and chewed the top few inches off of each one. I also could use better support, so I usually don’t wear them for more than a couple hours at a time – if I happen to be out all day in them, my feet let me hear about it.

I love my Muck boots! I wear them almost every day year round… Great for walking the dogs in tall wet grass in the morning, tromping through mud and streams in the woods, and sometimes working in the garden. For the garden I prefer something with less tread though, to cut down on how much dirt I track into the house. I also wear them AT work – I work for a land trust and spend a lot of time tramping around outside (lucky me!) and wear my muck boots because I never know what I’ll encounter, but know that they’ll get me through anything!

I have a pair of Muck boots that I got for Christmas. They are lined with neoprene and keep my feet fantastically warm in the winter. Before that, I was doing winter chores in a pair of plain rubber boots and my feet were miserably cold, even with my warmest pair of merino SmartWool socks.

Oh, and for summer, I picked up a pair of knock-off Keen’s at Payless Shoes. They protect my toes, my feet stay cool and I can knock the dirt out of them pretty easily.
