Quote of the Day: Hippocrates

May 15th, 2011

Let your food be your medicine
and your medicine be your food.

-Hippocrates

I was thinking about this quote yesterday as we were eating lunch. Mr Chiots has trouble with allergies this time of year and he hates taking antihistamines. We’ve been working on finding an herbal or natural treatment for them. He’s currently having great success with a homeopathic treatment, even better than he had with his regular medicine. I had just read this article before lunch and when I looked at my plate I realized we had incorporated a lot of the recommendations into our meal.

We had a big salad for lunch with honey grapefruit vinaigrette topped with, walnuts, dandelion blossoms, violet blossoms, and chives. All of the local pollen from the flowers & honey, the quercetin in the chives & garlic, the vitamin C from the violets & grapefruit are supposed to be really great at helping ease allergy symptoms. Now this is a tasty beautiful way to deal with those pesky allergies!

Do you have seasonal allergies? How do you deal with them?

I used Bee Pollen one year and it was miraculous for my allergies. I spread it on almond butter toast every couple of mornings, or mixed it into yogurt. My allergies were nil that year. Unfortunately for me, I’m one of the few people who seem to get severe stomach pains from using it. Unfortunately for Mr. Chiots, one needs to start before allergy season to really get the benefit. Might be worth it to try next year.

My hubby has a terrible time with allergies, and I have a terrible time getting him to eat something that would help. :)

It depends on his symptoms, but Mr Chiots is having the best luck with his homeopathic remedies. Since he has trouble with itchy eyes and stuffy nose we’re using Euphrasia and Sabadilla for him. So far better than any prescription he’s ever taken (although I think the healthy eating is helping a lot as well).

All of my seasonal allergies (spring & fall both) disappeared once I removed gluten from my diet 100% after suffereing with problems for about 20 years. No more sinus issues, itchy eyes, face, & nose, and most important, no more sinus infections.

I had chronic sinus infections year in & year out, and headaches in addition to chronic fatigue, IBS, & fibromyalgia symptoms.

Most of these are relieved as long as I keep it out of my diet 100%. Even a crumb is enough to set them all in action again..

My daughter suffers from seasonal allergies. The two remedies you mentioned…do they come in one product or separately? I thoroughly enjoy your blog! You live near where my son and daughter-in-law used to live (Dover) which makes it easy for me to picture the surrounding area.:o) It is a beautiful area. It makes me sad I don’t have an excuse to visit it any more.

I don’t…but my son does. And I just don’t think he’d eat this salad! I wonder if I were to eat the salad…if I could pass the healing on my osmosis. I’m willing to give it a try..it looks delicious and beautuiful!!

I don’t have allergies but my husband, Farmer MacGregor, does. Taking a tablespoon of local honey seems to help. I join him in the regime simply because I love honey. Give it a try. Remember…local honey.

Yes, we eat local honey as much as possible. I love using it in salad dressings and for sweetening tea, especially the Seasons of Discontent tea from Mt Rose Herbs (which is a tea with stinging nettles & other useful stuff to help with allergies).

I always try to eat local honey, but I didn’t realize all the other stuff helped too!

I use local honey, but the one thing that really works for me is fenegreek and thyme. I make my own capsules of this and its works better than when I used claritin. I take one at night before bed, and when they are really bothered by something my sinuses will be a little stuffy not long after waking, so I will take another. Within a short period of time it all goes away.

My daughter has started taking it as well, but only when hers are bothering her and she says if she takes it right when it starts it works better than later on.

Thanks for this post and the link to the article. I’m going to look into all of the things mentioned in the comments, as well–my daughter has terrible allergies. Thanks!
