Happy Memorial Day

May 30th, 2011

I’ll be spending today in the garden, as many others will. Memorial is kind of the unofficial kick-off to the gardening season around here. Everyone uses this weekend to weed and mulch their flowerbeds. I’ll be working on that new garden area. Hopefully planting beets and carrots. I’m also liberating another large chunk of the front lawn.

I am very thankful for all of those who are currently serving and have served in our armed forces on this Memorial Day Weekend. I’ll be thinking about: my grandpa – who served in WWII, my brother – who spend a tour in Korea and two tours in Iraq and Mr Chiot’s cousin, who spent two tours in Afghanistan.

How will you be celebrating this Memorial Day weekend? Do you have any friends or family who are serving or who have served in the armed forces?

Running out the back door to to do the same.. Netted the blueberries, mulched raspberries and the new strawberry bed. So wonderful to have a break from the rain and get caught up in the garden! Wishing you a most wonderful holiday weekend! Happy planting!!

Susy, It looks to be a summer day here in Nebraska. Temperature will climb to almost 90 today. That’s quite a change from the 60s we have been getting. I should be able to get the lawn mowed before celebrating with friends over the grill in the afternoon. Everything in the garden looks good except for the radishes. They are all top and no radish. I don’t know what happened there but I’m just about ready to pull them all out and replant.

I hope you and your family have a great Memorial day as well.

Most likely too much nitrogen on those radishes – try adding some bone meal when you replant.

Have a great cookout this evening!

Both of my Grandpa’s have served but they’re both gone now but my Grandma’s get Veteran’s Aide at their Assisted Living.

I have a cousin but he’s home now and his brother is training to serve and I have a friend of my brother’s that is serving and I had a friend that is home now from serving.

Went to a small country cemetery Memorial Day ceremony to honor those who have made the ultimate sacrifice. I will not shop on Memorial Day as retailers only look at it as another “holiday” to schlep their wares at a discount.

We’re the same way. We always stay home instead of shopping. It always bugs me that most holidays are turned into commercial days and the focus is on good deals not what it should be about. Especially a holiday like this when we’re remembering those that gave their lives.

We fly a flag that was draped over a family member’s coffin who served in D-Day along with many other flags to give thanks to those that gave their lives so the rest of us can enjoy our beautiful freedom.

On Veterans’ Day we do the same only we extend our gratitude to those still living that served or are still serving.

    It is a beautiful day.

It’s still a muggy 90 degrees here at 7:00 pm!!!!! Needless to say I didn’t do too much outside today – just cutting down a few seedlings and brambles. Maybe I’ll water some plants in a little while.

We’re having the same weather here – I was sweating it out all day digging up sod and liberating some more lawn. I just showered though and we’re going to spend the evening relaxing!
