Friday Favorite: Open Windows
This past week the weather has been really nice here in NE Ohio. I’ve heard people complaining about how cool it has been, but I for one LOVE it. It’s the perfect weather for keeping the windows open all day long: in the high 70’s during the day and dipping down into the low 60’s or high 50’s during the evening.
I really enjoy having the windows open so I can hear the birds, feel the breeze and enjoy the fresh air in the house. Sadly, here in NE Ohio it can get pretty hot and humid during the summer months and our home is not built to cool off when it’s hot. We open the windows whenever we can and close everything up when it’s simply too hot to handle. We’re hoping to install a whole house fan this fall or next spring so that we can keep the windows open more often during the summer.
Are you and open window person?

I am without a doubt an open window person. I live in sunny South Africa, so of course I would be, we have the most awesome weather here!! :)

I love the windows thrown open.. Mine have been open for day too. Im loving this NEO weather.. It feels great!
I had a whole house in Texas and it was awesome.. More people should know of them. Even there, it helped.. a LOT!

No A.C.+nasty, humid upstate summer=windows open from May to September.
I try to keep the bedroom window open until October, because I have a real sensitivity to stuffy rooms when I’m sleeping (this makes hotels pretty unbearable for me), but my husband usually complains. Such a delicate flower.

I am! I LOVE having windows and doors open when it’s cool outside. Don’t even mind the extra dusting it brings my way :)

I love having my windows open. I’m sitting here now (outside Atlanta, GA) with my windows open and my whole house fan going. I sleep so much better when I can run the fan at night. Unfortunately, we’ve had a stretch of mid 90s weather with several nights where it is still lowvto mid 80s when we go to bed, thus no fan. That doesn’t usually happen until later in the summer.

I am open windoow, husband is closed. We live on a noisy street so eventually had to get air conditioning (against my will) because it was too noisy to sleep at night with the windows open. I use it minimally in the heat of Ct. summer usually August. Pre-AC we used the very old whole house fan that was here when we moved in (vintage 1940’s?) and it worked great. Only on the days where it is very humid and doesn’t cool dowwn below the 80’s in the eve. does it not work. I think you will love it.I also have a portable fan that we use when it isn’t hot enough for the AC.

Here on an island on the coast of Maine, I have my windows open from as soon I can until I can’t any more in the fall. Many evenings though the windows have to go down because it gets too chilly. In my bedroom though, all 5 windows are open all summer. The only AC is mother nature.

Absolutely! I LOVE the windows open. I cannot stand air conditioning. I would rather have the windows open and fans going it I need to….and yet I married an heating & cooling guy!

Yes, I love open windows! I love how it makes the house smell better and, even more importantly, allows air to circulate and remove pollutants from the house. Indoor air is sometimes more polluted that outdoors and it’s important to keep windows open as much as possible !

Keep my windows open and keep ’em clean.

Open window all the way. From early spring to late fall, my bedroom window is open all night, I like a cool room so I can comfortably tuck up my covers under my chin. If it`s too hot to do that and I need to sleep barely covered by a sheet, I just don`t sleep as well. I love waking up to the sound of birds or better yet, rain!

Yes, yes and yes!! I can’t stand stuffy air, it makes me lethargic and cranky. Even in the winter here in the Snowbelt I open them a little on sunny days. I would rather be cold.

YES! Open windows as much as possible. Unfortunately, in Kentucky this year we jumped into the high 90s was too early in the season for my taste.

I’m not really an open window person because of my Mom’s asthma and allergies we have to be careful.

Oh I love open windows and I miss them this time of year. In the spring (March) I open doors and windows and use fans to push the cool air into the house (or warm air depending on the house temp). Sadly, our windows have been closed since the beginning of April w/ the a/c working overtime. 107F on my little weather station today & the weather man said 104F but felt like 113F. Man, I would go back and live in Palm Springs if I wanted those temps. We have been talking about a big attic fan/house fan like you mentioned to help pull the cooler air in and use that as much as we can before it gets too blasted hot. Emily

Amusing that a couple of the comments are from wives who love open windows but have husbands who don’t. Same here.

So funny – we’re kind of that way here. I can take the heat much onger and don’t mind it quite so much. But Mr Chiots is coming around – especially now that we’ve found a good homeopathic remedy for his allergies.

We love open windows around here. Our bedroom one is generally left open from spring through early fall, although we did have to shut it the other night because the frogs got so loud–that was a first!

Oooh, this is tricky. It’s winter here in Australia and right now between the odd shower of rain, I have the house wide open. It’s about 16 degrees Celsius., lovely! At night I like the house closed fully for security.
In the hot summer weather I like to open the house up first thing, to let the cool in then at mid morn, close it all up, curtains and all, to keep as much heat out as possible, then put the cooler on at about 3pm and lowest setting all night, other wise I can’t sleep. It gets over 40 celsius then.

Yes! I love sleeping with the windows open, there’s just something about the summer breeze that is so comforting. Some mornings I have to close them because the woodpeckers or fighting birds wake me up before I’m ready:)

We live kind of close to you I would guess and I have been LOVING the weather. These are the perfect temps for me I have read on my porch every night after I put my baby to bed.

I am jealous. It is much too hot here for open windows! I would love a cool air system right now!
