Quote of the Day: Rachel Carson
There is something infinitely healing in the repeated refrains of nature – the assurance that dawn comes after night, and spring after the winter.
– Rachel Carson (The Sense of Wonder)
We’re in the height of summer here in NE Ohio and I’m really enjoying it. The weather is warm, climbing into the mid 80’s on most days. The sun is strong, driving me indoors between noon and four. All these things bring the lush growth of the heat loving plants: peppers, tomatoes, cucumbers, and zucchini.
Fall will come soon though, it seems each year the seasons get shorter – I suppose it’s because I’m getting older. One of the benefits of being a gardener is that you become keenly aware of the distinctness of each season, the good things, the challenging things. I certainly would not want to live anywhere without a variety of seasons!
What are you enjoying about the season you’re in wherever your garden happens to be?

The seasons pass way to quickly anymore and I definitely think it has to do with the aging process…but I wouldn’t want to live where it is always hot or cold I like the change that comes with each one.I live in Northeastern Pa. and love it here.

About the only thing I enjoy about the stifling heat we’re getting now and for the foreseeable future is that it means the First Tomato will be ripe sooner.
Other than that, I would like to just submerge myself in the lake until it’s 65 degrees again.

We’ve had a brief respite from the heat this weekend and I’ve taken advantage of every second! It was cool enough to sit out on my deck and read last nite– hasn’t been like this since April! We’ve been mostly 100+ degree days here but only mid 80’s this weekend- sooo nice!

I was beginning to wonder about the peppers here in S.E. Michigan but it looks like I may get some habeneros yet. It’s too bad the jalapenos that I’ve picked already have been on the very mild side.
My rain barrels have been dry for days though.

Though I am not a huge fan of the heat, I do enjoy walking around barefoot!!

Well, I love the summer season so I think I am one of the heat-loving genuses! It is now 85-95 here everyday and I’m always outside working and watering in the heat. I have a big hat now for sun protection and love to come in parched and drink ice cold lemonade. The heat brings on the tomatoes, cucumbers and watermelons in my garden, now I just need to be patient until they ripen…

It is unspeakably hot during the day but I enjoy looking out the window and dreaming of the tomatoes producing again once it is cooler!

I love NEOhio.. I love summers here too.. mostly. ;) Most days its nice enough around here with a cool breeze off Lake Erie that the air has hint of coolness to it and the sun can be shining brightly heating those sun loving veggies up so Im not totally roasting.
You’d think being from Texas I could stand hot weather.. but I cant.. Maybe thats why I moved North. ;)
I love ALL the seasons Ohio has to offer.. each is spectacular in its own.

About the only thing I am enjoying about this summer is the fact that the birdbath I put out has been really busy. Everything else is utterly miserable and everything in my veggie garden is dead because of the drought. I’m glad someone is enjoying it because all I can think is “come on, October!”

Susy, Yikes we are in the heat index today. Temperature will be 99 with heat index 105. Tomorrow even higher. My motto when the heat is on, work a little, rest a lot, and drink lots. Fifteen minutes in the heat is enough and resting 30 minutes with a big drink is the routine for the day. Daily watering of the garden with deep mulch helps the garden to survive. My watering system waters the roots under the mulch which helps the plants endure the long days of heat. If the heat continues I just may have to go to watering twice a day but the deep mulch has been keeping the ground moist and cool so far.
Have a great day in the garden.
