Targeted Ads

September 19th, 2011

Yesterday afternoon my nieces & nephew came over for a visit. While I was chatting with my sister in the side garden we noticed 3 pre-teen girls stapling an ad to a tree right behind my mailbox. Then they proceeded to walk down the street yelling “Dog Walking, Dog Walking, Dog Walking”. While all this was happening Lucy was sitting in the front yard barking at them. The kids wanted to go over to read the sign, so we did:
What a great little flier, I love the “100% garenteed”. It’s kind of funny that they put up this flyer right across from our house, since have empty lots on both side and across the street. The only person that will see it is us – how’s that for targeted ads! I was always an industrious little girl. My sister and had always had a business going to earn money, our most profitable was a popsicle business.

What kinds of things did you do to make extra cash when you were young?

My big money maker was my strawberry patch. I made a lot of extra money that way! Also, babysitting, and making gift cards (I found some left over ones of these last year – who ever bought them was definitely being nice to a little kid trying to make some money!)

I used to pick strawberries for the local orchard for 50 cents a quart during strawberry season.

I would make lots of fun crafts and sell them at local craft fairs. I had my first official business at 14! Lots of fun and such an awesome learning experience.

Oh yes, I did some lawn mowing when I was in high school – and house cleaning for the lady across the street.

As a mom, I think I would be a little concerned that my telephone numbers were being displayed on a blog, when I had given permission that they be put on a flyer in the neighborhood.
It’s a cute sign, but perhaps you could blur the numbers.

Really? Guess since I don’t have kids I don’t understand why exactly having the phone number displaying is dangerous. But I blurred it.

Funny you post this today. Yesterday I went on a walk with my boyfriend and there were a group a little girls selling lemonade. It was so cute! I remember my first lemonade stand as a kid, my unique selling point was we had orange juice too!

I think the first paying “job” I ever had was diving into a lake for golf balls when I was 7 or 8. The guys on the golf course would pay us X amount for a bucket.. haha.. it was probably 10 or 25 cents a bucket.
I also picked a vegetable garden one summer for some change.. Mostly okra as I remember.. :D

I used to walk alleyways and pick up discarded pop bottles.. I really wish I could remember how much we got.. it was 5 or 10 cents a dozen..

I sold Current stationary products & Christmas cards for a portion of the sales and I also sold flower & vegetable seeds for a portion of the sales.
I started baby sitting when I was 8 and stopped by the time I was 14 I think..

I had a limeaide stand once.. but I forgot the ice… amazingly, I still made money. I will never forget the guy saying “wheres the ice?” Duh! LOL

I moved a huge pile of bricks for my uncle after they built on to their house. That brick pile sat there forever, and he payed me, my brother, & cousins $5 each to move it. After we were done, he took us to a store down the road & we spent it all on candy… Thats like $50 in todays bucks.. We all had huge bags of candy.. Bet my aunt was furious. LOL I dont remember anything more besides looking in that bag full of candy.. I probably got sick.

I cant think of anything else right now, but I was always looking to make a buck or two.. I’ve always been pretty industrious, especially if I want something. ;)

Ah, so sweet! To make money as a kid I picked blueberries! Now I pick my own for free. My mother also paid me to rub her feet–is that weird? Her feet were always sore so it was good money.
