Swanky Purple Sunglasses Seeking New Owner

September 21st, 2011

We live on a fairly well traveled road in our little community. It’s the main thoroughfare and we get a good deal of traffic every day. As a result we often find trash and random items in our front flowerbed and ditch in front of our house. We find the usual drink cans, plastic bags, pieces of paper and the occasional odd item like a cell phone charger. When we got home from vacation Mr Chiots was weeding the front hillside garden and said, “Hey, I found your lost sunglasses”.

We both got a good laugh because they’re a little too stylish for my tastes. I’m sure the owner is sad that she (hopefully not he) lost them, but into the goodwill pile they will go to find a new home.

And a little self portrait so you can see what my flowers and vegetables always see when I’m out and about taking photos for the blog.

Have you ever found anything left by passersby in your garden?

We live on a well traveled state highway. Garbage of various types is always tossed in our yard. Drive through wrappers, cups, liquor bottles, soda cans, etc. The most memorable (and disgusting) thing tossed into our yard was a dirty diaper!! I don’t know where people think the garbage they toss out of their cars goes, but I wish I had the opportunity to return some of it!

I agree, we’ve found a few very gross items in our ditch!

Well … When I first moved here, I unearthed a little St. Joseph statue while making beds for my garden. I didn’t know what to do with it so now he sits on my window sill over the kitchen sink.

I was working in my parents’ yard and discovered a long-forgotten about mermaid doll (they were called Sea Wees, from the 80’s) that became unearthed. Also, my mom lost a ring in the front beds and it turned up two years later in the back yard. Things are always surfacing in the beds at work, especially pieces of broken china. I collect them and make mosaics from them.

Guh – I wouldn’t wear those either! I like the more amber/brown tinted sunglasses… far more natural.
Oh the things I found in my garden… the previous owners of my home had two young children, and sadly a lot of their plastics ended up in the soil. Pop-gun refil pieces, Power Ranger’s missing a leg, the leg in a different area of the garden, random coins, plastic glittery rings… but once I found the front piece of a girls’ belt that is now an ornament in my veggie garden because it’s so gaudy – it’s got diamonds and it says “Juicy Couture“.
[I placed it on a post that my tomatoes grow on to remind them to be JUICY! hehe]

Great idea – love that you used what you found in the garden – hopefully the tomatoes heed the message!

I live in the middle of a farm so don’t get any car or foot traffic past the house; but i used to unearth alot of old bits of blue and white china in my veggie plot.. Occasionly in fields by the house we find bits of an old jet that crashed on the farm in the 60’s, an American Voodoo plane.

I do know one girl and two guys that would wear sunglasses like that. Not me. when we first moved into our house and I was working in the yard, trimming and cleaning things up I found all sorts of things. Mainly stuffed animals and chew toys from the previous owners dogs. I didn’t know what the stuffed animal were, I thought they were dead animals lying about, didn’t take long to figure it out. There is a big plastic carrot chew toy I have keep, it gets moved from garden to garden. Just this spring I was startled by something in a tree – turned out to be one of those stuffed animals. No idea how it got in the tree. Out front, it is just the assorted trash, most of which can get recycled (bottles & cans). When ever I take a walk I am always taking a bag with me to pick up trash, Like Kate said earlier, where do people think the trash goes that they throw out of the car?

Perhaps – sometimes I accidentally schedule two things to post in a day and fix them – guess you were up early. At least you commented the second time around.

Our farm is on a busy highway so we always have trash from cars in our ditch. The county forest is just next door and people dump big things in there. Last week I brought home a good steel extension pole for painting and two black iron dining chairs without seats for the garden. I think they will look great with my large 4′ dahlias growing through the seats!
