The Beauty of Old Friendship

November 14th, 2011

This past weekend I traveled down to Cincinnati, OH to meet up with some college girlfriends. We met in 1994 during the fall of our freshman year of college and became fast friends right away. Our years in college were spent together creating lots of fun memories while building a foundation for a friendship that would last the rest of our lives. In 1998 we parted and went our separate ways. This photo was taken on graduation day, marking the end of the first phase of our friendship.

Although our lives have taken us each down a different road to a different city, we get together at least once a year. We have cried tears of joy when celebrating marriages and births, and tears of joy and grief through divorce and the death of a husband.

Although we all have made other friends throughout the years of our lives, there’s just something comforting about a friendship with a long rich history. We relish these moments when we can spend time together, even though it is all too brief. I’m very grateful for these girlfriends that have been in my life for 17 years. A warm thanks goes out to my friends: Danielle, Shannon, Kelly, Katie, and Jen for all the wonderful memories we’ve made so far and the all the ones we’ll make in the future.

Do you have any friendships that have withstood the test of time?

What a blessing good friends are. My best friend has been in my life for over 25 years and she is my true sister. It’s so great that you can still get together with your pals.

Yes! And there’s nothing better. The sisters in different ways (just like real sisters) that I’ve never had.

College friends are the best! We may not see each other for several years, but when we meet again it’s like we last saw each other yesterday.

That is so nice! And I love the photos :)

Myself and a college friend of mine remain good friends 11 years later. It is such a good thing!

I have one friend from each school I went to who I’m still in touch with, and if I called them tomorrow it would be as if we had never parted ways.

Other than that, I’m married to one. ;)

My two best friends are from Jr. High. We have been through thick and thin together. We all live about 7 hours away from eachother and we try to get together at least every six months. In fact, I have my tickets bought for the next get together, the weekend after Thanksgiving.

I`ve been truly blessed with great friends throughout all the stages of my life and for that I am deeply grateful. I`m lucky to still have friends from grade school. We had signed an eternal friendship vow on a napkin at a school picnic in 2nd grade and we hold dear to it still. It`s funny that you wrote this today since I phoned up a friend from University last night and we talked till 1 am, catching up after a few years without talking.

I still have friendships with some of my friends and neighbors but don’t see them often but do keep in touch via facebook though.

I have a very dear friend from grade school days…we are now 68 years old and keep in touch thru e-mails and phone calls. We saw each other this summer for our 50th class reunion. She lives in Canada so our get togethers aren’t as frequent as we would like. There is nothing like a friend who shares all those years of history with you.

My girlfriends from Junior High meet every year on my birthday (for 39 years) . Four of us meet at least one weekend a month. We all graduated from high school in 1972!

When I was 13, I put fliers on everyones house in our neighborhood, that I was interested in babysitting, with my name, age, address & phone number. One lady saw it & decided I was just the right kind of girl to be friends with her daughter who was coming to live with her in a couple months, so she kept it.

She neednt have. I was walking down the street and this beautiful gal my age was walking towards me. We stopped in the middle of the street & started talking. We were instant best friends and we’re still very close to this day. She was born 5 days before me..

We live 2,000 miles apart but I just saw her when I went to see my dad. She lives in the same area, still. I agree, its great to have old friends.

I still have quite a few friends from my early 20s and some from my 30s. Im 1200 miles from all of them, but I have family in that area too so I get to see many of them when I come to town..

One thing I find funny is that some people I thought I would stay in touch with, I havent… and others I never considered it with, I have… And Im so glad to have the ones I have.. They are indeed a blessing! ♥♥♥

Yes. I too have a few very dear old friendships. We love that when we are together we don’t have to explain any “history” We all know each other’s ancient stories and intimate details pretty well. It’s just wonderful to have friends that can empathize, cheer for and mourn with you as needed. My best friend just moved out of state this summer. We have been friends since we were 3. I thought it was going to be very difficult to be apart, however we talk almost every day and manage to see each other almost every month. Thank you for this post! I love that you guys used the same pose for your “get together” photo. I am going to share that idea with both my daughters who have very tight knit group of old high school friends. They would love the idea of recreating one of their old high school or middle school poses.
