Quote of the Day: Laura Ingalls Wilder

December 11th, 2011

One morning the whole world was delicately silvered. Every blade of grass was silvery and the path had a thin sheen. It was hot like fire under Laura’s bare feet, and they left dark footprints in it. The air was cold in her nose and her breath steamed. So did Spot’s. When the sun came up, the whole prairie sparkled. Millions of tiny, tiny, sparks of color blazed on the grasses.

Laura Ingalls Wilder

It seems like winter has been long in coming this year. Lately we’ve been waking up to a heavy frost blanketing the ground and the temperatures in the 20’s. It’s a beautiful thing for sure, I love seeing the frost glittering as the run rises.

I’m excited for winter, both for the snow that brightens this dark season and for the sweet rest it provides. I’m a seasonal gal for sure. I keep telling Mr Chiots that I really want to take up snowshoeing because I love being outside in the cold so much during this season.

What’s your favorite cold weather activity?

I love the way the frost glitters with the sunrise as well. It’s a magical time of day, for sure.

Snowshoeing sounds like a lot of fun. I’ve always loved bundling up and taking walks around our neighborhood in the winter (especially now, when we get to see how everyone has decorated for the holidays.) I’m also looking forward to taking the kids sledding this year.

When my niece’s and nephew are here for Christmas I will be spending lots of time with them but I also like being curled up with a book.

    …Love that quote. Got a visual. :o)

…And your photos? As always, *swoons*

…Outdoor activity would be just walking. I love to walk thru the snow, thru the snow covered woods and just gaze at the beauty. And I can’t help to laugh out loud when I have to walk thru deep snow, there’s just something about it when it’s up to your knees and you have to stop and pause before you take the next big step or throw all your cares to the wind and just fall back into it and roll around until your joyfully exhausted. Yeah, I’m kind of a dork. *giggle*shrug*

    …Have a wonderful day Chiot’s Family!

    …Blessings :o)

In the winter, I most enjoy cooking, reading, & crafting of some sort… For outside, I enjoy cross country skiing though I dont do it often enough..
And taking photos… there is just something special about the wintertime landscape.
    You’ve caught it beautifully!

My favorite outdoor cold weather activity is snowshoing. I Xcountry ski too but snowshoes allow me to explore animal tracks and go where ever I want to.
Indoors, I enjoy reading by the wood stove.

snowshoeing and cross country skiing… I like the snowshoeing better because it’s a little easier to navigate off trail to explore and of course I like to go icefishing with my friends once in a while then have a fish fry afterwards

I love watching the birds at our feeders – more varieties every year. Good photo ops and just plain fun. Love walking our shi tsu mix in the snow – she loves it, even when the snow’s deeper than she is tall!

The crispness of the air and the sereneness of the day are always so special to me. Gives me a chance to soak up some daylight I so sorely miss and need.

Staying inside and making soup! I’m just not a fan of cold weather. I love watching the birds in the winter though. Especially the bluebirds. I don’t have a lot of bluebirds in the summer,I only had one pair nest this past summer, but in the winter a whole flock of them come to drink water from the birdbath. It is so awesome to watch them!!

Baking and snuggling with my sweetie.

I have cold-activated asthma, so winter outdoor activities aren’t high on my list, though I used to love cross-country skiing.

Baking bread. Trimming trees. Making cookies. Tending wild roses. Soup. Planning the spring planting. Movie marathon with pop corn. Sleeping late – very late. Reading in front of the fire. Going through a million million old family photos. Hot chocolate and marshmallows. Planning an over-the-top Thanksgiving feast for next year. Cleaning out my candle drawer and lighting up the late afternoon gloom. Calling old friends, out of the blue.
