Here Comes Suzy Snowflake…

December 18th, 2011

“To appreciate the beauty of a snow flake,
it is necessary to stand out in the cold.”

-unknown

Yesterday about noon the snow started flying here at Chiot’s Run. It happened at the perfect time, as I was working on my Christmas cards. Not too long before the sun went down I grabbed my camera and headed out into the cold to capture the first snowfall of the season!

“The Sweets” aka the feral garage cat, doesn’t come out of the garage much unless she hears or sees us out. She’s really missing having me in the garden a lot during the day. Whenever she hears the door open, she appears in a flash and is rubbing on my legs legs to get some attention, so much for being feral right! Everywhere I went yesterday, there she was, right behind me. As you can see by the second photo, she got some of Miss Mama’s green in her eyes!

Mr Chiots was hunting all day in the neighbor’s woods behind our house and he came home while I was out. I managed to sneak a photo of him all dressed up in his warm woolen layers. He’s off to the family hunting cabin today to meet his cousin, who’ll be deer hunting for the first time – wish them luck!
I’m happy to have it on the ground as long as the cold weather sticks around. Nothing brightens up a dull dreary winter day more than some beautiful white snow. Not to mention, I need to make up for all those white Christmases I missed while growing up in South America!

Do you get snow in your area?

Beautiful photos of the white stuff.
Nope, no snow here, but I had my fill growing up in Chicago.

Yes, sometimes a lot, but this year I think will be different. It is very warm here for December, it is supposed to get around 40 something today. We are usually starting to plunge into the below zero temps, but I don’t think that it will be happening this year.
Have a wonderful, peaceful Christmas/Holiday season to you and your family.

We have gotten snow for the last two winters. For here that is a bit unusual. Winter before last we had record amounts 11-14 inch fell. Unheard of in this part of Texas. That was very hard as we are not set up for that kind of snow in our area. Power was out for days, everything closed down. Trees broken over everywhere from the weight of that much snow of which they were not used to. Last year it was less but we got snow a couple times. Luckily about 6″ was the most at once. Which is still a lot of snow for here! I am not much of a snow bunny LOL. I think as I say partly because we simply are not set up for it here nor for super super cold temps. We have made some changes in the animal barns now and we are much more prepared should we see this again! My greenhouse survived that big snow probably by me getting some of the load off its roof. I was so worried it might give way. But luckily nope it did just fine! The other garden things did not fair as well. But nothing that could not be repaired.

Here in Mid Missouri we have not had any snow yet. That’s alright though because I am still getting over the snowfall we had last year.

With a bit of a wet thump, once a year, maybe twice, some years none. But that’s at 400 feet. Our snow is altitude-dependent, as we are in the Cascade foothills. So, already, in November, once, we saw a New Hampshire-like calendar scene all around us, but only a flurry here. Freezing fog ever since. :( But that makes it all the easier for family to come for Christmas! :)

Our homemade tree angel is sixty years old this year and her name is Suzy Snowflake! I re-posted about her a couple of days ago. Regards to you and Mister.

Here in So Cal we dont really get snow. Maybe once every 20 years we will get a light dusting that doesnt last very long. Instead, if we want snow we head up to Mr Baldy or Big Bear. Mt Baldy is just a 20 minute drive up the local mountains, and Big Bear which has skiing is a good 60 minutes drive.Of we want snow, we can get it, if we want surfing its also about 30 minutes away!

We do get snow in Fairbanks, Alaska. Although, it is not as much as most people think. Our primary times for snow are November and March, the rest of the winter it is just too cold to snow!

What a beautiful cat (and I’m a dog person)! We haven’t gotten snow yet this month, but we had a blizzard on October 29th! It’s freezing cold out ~ the weather channel is predicting rain and possible snow here on the 23rd…my sister told me the Farmer’s Alamanc is predicting a blizzard this week :) We’ll see.

Definately no snow here. It should be hot but we are having a very cold start to summer. Rain today (again). Oh well, after years of drought a year of wet (and fungal problems) every is actually quite nice. Gorgeous photos.

Crud. I could have been in shorts today when I was pruning the fruit trees. Your Christmas is only in my dreams. I’ve only ever known clear and sunny Christmases.

    Beautiful.

I don’t live too far from you so we had the same snow you did. About an inch or so. It was pretty but it’s all melted already.

My cat was a feral kitten. He was found, by my son, on the engine of a Dodge, so he was named Hemi. To see him one would never guess he was feral. He even lets me pick him up now!

What an adorable cat! It definitely does not snow too much here in New Mexico where I’m at. Happy holidays!
