Something Sweet from the Oven

February 10th, 2012

I’m not much of a sweet eater, preferring something salty instead. Mr Chiots on the other hand, loves sweets and loves to see something sweet from the oven. Winter is the perfect time for baking since it’s cold outside and you feel like you’re warming the house a bit.

Before our trip to Maine last week I remembered that I had two pastry crusts in the fridge left over from the how-to video I made for Ethel. Regular pies are not good for traveling, but hand pies are perfect. I pulled out a jar of Caramelized Apple Marmalade with Thyme (recipe from Preserving the Taste) and made up a little something sweet for Mr Chiots. If you’d like the recipes, head on over to Eat Outside the Bag.

These are so easy to make and oh so tasty, I also like that they’re not too sweet since there’s only a small amount of jam in each one! These were perfect snacks for our trip, easy to eat while we were on the go.

Do you prefer sweet or salty?

I always hated the ones that you can buy at the store. I know I’ve never been able to eat a whole one because they always tasted horrible to me, but these look wonderful!

I was thinking about making a pie this weekend with lard, which will be my first, and these will be perfect to try! I have all sorts of jams and jellies, so this will be fun.

    Thanks for the idea!

I’m torn between the two. Since my time working w/ sweets everyday, I can honestly say I don’t crave sugar much. However, every once in a while I need a “fix”. Give me a good piece of cheese on some awesome bread and a satisfying glass of red wine, and I’m in HEAVEN. :)

I’m torn between the two. Usually in the morning, I crave some sort of a sweet treat. At night, once dinner is over and the kids are in bed, I will have a salty snack with a glass of wine. Good olives or prosciutto or even a bit of toasted bread with sea salt and Romano cheese.

I like salty-sweet, like salted caramels, or chocolate chip cookies made with lots of salted butter. I save the pie crust for last.

I believe I’m some version of a super-taster — I don’t care for strong flavors that overwhelm my tongue. I prefer complex flavors, and mixes.

But I can see how I’d love these little pie-cookies. I’ve seen a couple of recipes floating around for them, and I imagine the buttery crust and the jam would be a perfect blend.

…Sweet. But I have to admit that my fav’ is a combination of the two. Like Kettlecorn. Love, love, LOVE me some Kettlecorn. I can eat my weight in it. Actually make a fool outta myself with it. I’m shameless, what can I say. ;o)

…These do look delish’ altho’ I would have to have a drizzle of sweet glaze on top. Mmm hmm. :o)

…Btw, anxiously awaiting the house reviews. No pressure but I’m sitting on pins & needles here! lol… ;o)

    …Enjoy your day you two!

    …Blessings :o)

Last week, I attempted to make something very similar to those little pie cookies and used a recipe from Smitten Kitchen. Needless to say, they didn’t turn out.

For most of my life, I could pass the sweets right up with the exception of one piece of pecan pie at Thanksgiving and maybe another at Christmas.. but in the last 5 years or so, I’ve gotten to where I enjoy sweet more than I used to.. I still prefer salty & savory, but stick a glazed donut or a cinnimon roll in my face, and Im a gonner Good thing they’re not in my face often. ;)
