It’s a Beautiful Day, or two, or three

July 11th, 2012

We’ve been having the perfect weather here recently. After a weeks in the high 90’s and even peaking into the triple digits a few days last week, the 80’s are feeling GREAT! As a result I’ve been madly spending every waking hour I’m not working trying to get all my garden chores finished up. I think I could build a cat thermometer that measured the length of Dexter in order to tell the temperature outside. This day it was 98.

The onions need harvesting, the garlic is dry and needs trimmed and moved into the basement. Kale and sage seeds need harvested, beans and cucumbers need planted and everything needs a good weeding. While I’ve been out trying to get all my garden chores finished up, Dexter is not far behind doing his own work, mainly sleeping and being cute.

Now if we can only get some rain I’ll be one happy gardener!

How’s the weather/rain situation in your garden?

The weather here in the UK is just wet…wet and more wet. My veg are sitting waiting for some warmth to get going growing.
I still have fleece up to protect my climbing beans from the wind.
And the slugs and snails….oh cripes.
    All in all abit depressing!

It’s cooled off a little around here, low 90’s. We are getting tons of rain at the moment- summer thunderstorms. They haven’t done too much damage to the garden yet, everything is just a bit blown around. The ground is soaked to the core though after two nights of rain.

For the record, I love it when you post about Dexter.

Cooled down into the 90’s but still no rain. To say our grass is crunchy is an understatement. We’ve been watering the garden manually and its still coming along…. tomatoes starting to ripen, black beans/cucs/squash/melons are starting to blossom, and the basil is going wild!

Our sweet feral kitty has disappeared! :( So I am really enjoying seeing Dexter!! We used to have a house cat but I started having problems breathing…. we discovered I was allergic to her which was bizarre as we had had a short hair male for 12 years and there were no problems.

We finally hit the seventies and eighties in Seattle. Our June was much like Mich’s. Just getting melons and corn planted now. Thank God we have a greenhouse…harvested 2 zucchini already.

Dexter is a real cutie pie! Poor ball o’ fur in 90 degree weather.

For one of my cats, it’s not so much length that could be used to measure the temperature, but the amount of belly showing. In the winter she will lay curled up or flat on her belly. When in starts to warm up, she lays on her side stretched out like Dexter is. Then when it gets really hot, like yesterday, she spends most of her time right on her back with all four feet in the air. Either that or she lays with her head on the edge of her water dish.

Still way too dry here in Ohio. I’ve been watering weekly since the lat week in March except foir 1 week. I’ts getting so depressing as watering is not the same as rain and it isn’t doing so great. Of course the bugs are rampant so what survives the drought is likely to get eaten by bugs and I won’t use chemicals. The rain goes north and south of us and leaves us with none unfortunately. OIf course weeds grow but but even the grass is still crunchy. I’d rather mow the lawn than have a dry garden. I love seeing Dexter also. I love cats and have indoor and outdoor ones. We get drop-offs all the time and I hate the irresponsible people who do that. Thanks for the posting.

We’ve finally gotten out of the 100s but still no rain. Lots of people around us have received rain, but it has hopped over us a couple of times. They are forecasting a soaking rain for this weekend. I am HOPING they will be right!

Yep, second crop for beans/cukes. I like to plant a second crop to provide after the first crop wanes.

We’ve had four days of rain…and I haven’t been to my garden much since we’ve been moving. It needs help!

    Weather: hellish
Rain: I don’t understand. What is this thing called rain?

Typical July in the San Joaquin Valley.

Yes, as Maybelline says it has been hellish in Massachusetts. I get home from work and spend 1 1/2 hours watering the garden, just the vegetable garden I should say. The weeds are over-taking it, and it looks and feel like August. High 80’s to low 90’s prevail. My friend used to wish it would rain every other day….I now understand why she felt that way ~ I’m tuckered!
