My Mom’s Potager in Late July

August 4th, 2012

Last week I was over at my mom’s and took a few photos of her edible garden. I often help her with the garden chores, though this year, with the move, I’ve had less time to visit and work in the garden.

She was having trouble with a few baby rabbits getting in and eating her beans and peas, so she decided to put up a traditional scarecrow. I must admit, it looks great and I might have to put one in my garden next year.

My mom’s garden looks better than any garden I’ve seen. She’s reaping the rewards of years of hard work adding organic matter to the soil and avoiding chemicals. As a result, her garden retains moisture better than most do.

For over a month, we’ve been harvesting ‘Early Girl’ tomatoes from a really early planting in a cold frame super early in the spring. You can clearly see where I got my green thumb from!

Do you have any family members that have big beautiful gardens?

The MiL’s cousin has the most amazing vegetable garden ever. Huge and perfectly tended. Mostly by her husband, from whom we get the onion sets that he starts from seed in their greenhouse.

    That man is my hero.

Wow, it’s gorgeous even in spite of the heat! You definitely had a good teacher! My aunt and uncle’s garden is always gorgeous, they are not skilledin organic gardening. I honestly think they just got lucky with very healthy soil conditions!

Beautiful garden! Your mother will miss gardening with you when you move. I know I would.

We’ll certainly miss gardening together, but this year she’s really enjoying giving away all that good produce to friends & neighbors. So maybe she’ll just start doing more of that, or plant more flowers!

Such a beautiful garden! I love working with my mom and sister in their gardens….even though they are in Ohio and Virginia I get to at least touch their gardens once in the season.

My goal is to have soil so deep and fluffy you can plunge an arm in. But that’s years away.

What a beautiful garden! My grandmother always had a lovely garden on their farm when I was growing up. I loved that she always had a row of gladiolus, asters, zinnias growing along one edge of her garden, just so she could have cut flowers. Over the years her gardens got smaller but I had to smile when we went back for her funeral to find at 90 years old she had planted a tiny garden filled with tomatoes, a cucumber, basil, dill, marigolds, and nasturtiums just weeks prior to her taking ill and passing away.

So sweet, hopefully I’ll be gardening well into my 90’s too. My mom plants a row of zinnias all along the front of her garden too.

    I’m it.
You mom’s garden is lovely. Her time spent in the garden is apparent. Truly lovely.
