The Mad Dash

August 20th, 2012

Last Thursday our contractor finally arrived. He was scheduled to come a month ago, but you know how those things go. We’ve been pacing the floors  waiting for him because we couldn’t do much until he did a few things. He took tons of measurements, installed a few boards to let us know where the walls would be, gave us a supply list and he was off.

Friday evening we got started on the mad dash to get the house ready to put on the market. We worked late into the night and until noon the next day installing the hardwood flooring. It’s the same kind we have throughout the main floor of the house.

On Saturday afternoon and evening we worked on a few other odd jobs that needed finished, like putting in the roof vents. Then we ran to the home improvement store to get supplies.

Sunday, Mr Chiots spend most of the day working on the electrical installation, while my friend and I painted trim and the doors.

Of course the foreman was always paying attention to make sure we were getting our work finished.

Mr Chiots and I are so happy that this final leg of the race has begun. We’ll be spending nearly every hour of every day on this project so the FOR SALE sign can be put in the yard this coming weekend. By finishing the upstairs our little house will no longer the two bedroom we’ve lived in for 10 years. It will be up for sale as a four bedroom, two and a half bath home. Hopefully whoever buys this lovely home will love it as much as we have.

Have you ever done any major remodeling projects?

The house I live in now used to be 2 farm worker cottages. They had been unlived in for over 50yrs, no running water or electricity.
So it definately was a major remodelling! Lol.
Hope you get everything done for this weekend & fingers crossed it sells quickly :)

Does building a tiny house count as major renovation? I mean, we are turning a trailer into a house. :)

You know Susy, I’d buy your home in a heartbeat if I was able to! :D
My boyfriend and I haven’t yet really dipped our toes into the major projects we want to do, but we have put in a new support beam in our living room after the previous owner took down a wall and then only put some shabby 2×4’s in… That was a wake-up call with the second floor “gaming room” started to sink in in the center!
We do have plans to tear down a wall between two rooms in the first floor, to create a larger living room and to put in an actual dining room.
And I want to make a room in the attic & basement too… we’ll be losing a bedroom, so I’d like to create more living space utilizing other areas of our house…
Now to only be as good as you guys in your carpentry/installing! It’s inspiring the work you two do. And Dexter. >D

We are also in a mad dash. We are trying to finish up the 1850’s school house we started 29 years ago. Just odds and ends and a new septic system before we can put it on the market. We had settlement on our new place last week and have been busily moving things out of the old place so we have more room to work. Still need to stain/finish the floors in 2 rooms, carpet 3 bedrooms, touch up paint in many places, etc, etc.

That looks like my bedroom. Those slanted ceilings are where I like to bump my head now and then! I love the flooring you put in, and it looks like you have the sweetest foreman! :-)

Your house is lovely and now you are making it even more attractive to potential buyers by adding the extra space. Good thinking and I hope it moves quickly. You mentioned remodels…Yes, my husband and I added a second story (3 bedrooms and bath) to our 1926 bungalow but made sure the addition fit the time period of the home. In the middle of this project my husband learned we would need to move to PA for a new career opportunity with his employer. AFter pouring our heart and soul into the outside of the home for 6 years and then finally going forward with the remodel we only enjoyed the finished product for 1 month before moving. Sad, but a great experience too. Still love that little house.

You have a beautiful home, and I’m sure any buyer would be lucky to take your place.

No! No projects for me other than painting :) But you guys ROCK! I’m so excited for all of the changes you’ve made in the house and in the garden over your time there. Can’t wait to see what’s in store!

What you are doing is amazing. When we lived in VT years ago, we did a lot of work on the house we bought. All work was a major improvement and helped very much when we decided to sell. We re-did the kitchen a few months before moving ~ it was beautiful! Hope you sell quickly and am looking forward to future blogs of your new home.
