Friday Favorite: SNOW

December 28th, 2012

It’s been a long time coming, but winter seems to have finally arrived. Fitting I guess, since it was officially winter just a week ago. We had a good snowfall yesterday, about 6-8 inches or so. Mr Chiots, my dad and I all went out hiking for a few hours in the morning to enjoy it. We really do enjoy the snow.

Now perhaps we’ll finally be able to get those snowshoes out and break them in. The garden really needs this blanket of snow, it’s a valuable source of insulation and protection for the plants. It’s just in time, the weather is going to start dipping down into the single digits this weekend.

Your photos of the new snow capture it just right!
Every year, the first snow so surreal to me, who grew up in snowless Paris.
By the way, the HSP and introvert person pod cast was so helpfull.
I have thought of myself not as an introvert, but as shy person, you are giving me food for thought now. I think I may well be more of an introvert, and I have always been an HSP.
How do you manage the movies? So loud these days, and the smell of popcorn ‘butter’ is awful to me.

Same here. My son got snowshoes for Christmas (L.L.Bean comes through again with something for children that’s actually well-made and useful), and I think he and my husband will be out today to break them in.

I don’t have snowshoes, so I will not be going. But I suspect snowshoes are in my near future now.

Susy, already there in Nebraska. The snow blanket fell just before Christmas and now the single digit temperatures (1) has arrived many times this week. This is the Nebraska winter weather that I remember from childhood not the winter of last year. I for one am glad to see that nature has once again gotten back on track for Nebraska.

Have a great day enjoying the snow.

We booked it up to Ellsworth just ahead of the storm, and awoke Thursday morning to a blanket of snow and big, fluffy flakes all day long. I’m amazed that even Downeast got this much – but excited! It’s gorgeous out there. Definitely a walk in our future this afternoon.

    Happy hols!

It snowed here the day after Christmas, which for northish Alabama, is quite rare! It was fairly light at times and didn’t even lay but we were happy to see it. lol! I hope we get a really good snow this year.

Can’t wait to get my snowshoes out. In 2010-2011 there was actually too much snow and last winter none. This is beginning to look normal.Glad you are going to enjoy such a great ME winter recreation.

Love it! Even thought this is my second year in upstate NY, it’s really only my first real winter here since we barely had any snow last year. As a Californian, I’m still learning a lot about driving in snow and cold weather clothes, but I love playing in the snow. A friend gave me these great Timberland snow boots last year and now I can finally break them in!

I bought snowshoes winter of 2009-2010 but late so didn’t get to use them. Then next year I had knee surgery so no using that year. last year very little so not that year. We got 6-7″ Wed. But haven’t felt good enought to be out. Maybe this year I will get to use them. I hope so. Never have so will be an experience. Thanks for sharing the wonderful pix. I would give most anything to live in a place like you do.

Love your snowy, wooded pictures. The beauty of your photos is exactly why I love winter hiking so much. The only challenge is trying to take lots of pictures without freezing your fingers off. In addition to snowshoes (which many of my hiker friends use),I also find my Kahtoola micro spikes indispensable when hiking any elevation in icy or snowy conditions. Enjoy your first winter in the northern woods!
