Welcome

January 5th, 2013

When we decided to move to Maine all of our friends and family started talking about coming to visit. They all said, “I hear Maine is wonderful, I can’t wait to visit you.” When we lived in Ohio, we rarely had a visitor, but we also had a very small house and no guest room. Now we have 2 guest rooms — and they’re being used!
Welcome guests
I set them both up a couple days before Christmas when we found out my parents were coming up for a visit. There was no time to paint, but I did clean them well and tried to make them as homey as possible. New flannel sheets were ordered, along with electric mattress pads, furniture was moved in that was stored in the garage and fabric panels hung over the windows.

I’m really glad I got them set up when I did, another friend come visit this week so they’ve been used a lot already. They’re nothing too exciting, just a collection of random things, but they’re comfortable. I am planning on making quilts for the beds and painting the walls, I just have to find the time to do that, which may not be until next winter! Having guests is more about conversation and visiting than it is about the decor of the guest room anyways.

Do you have frequent guests in your home?

I like the rug too! Yes .. we have a lot of visitors as we live in a mountain destination area. We built our home with guests in mind and put a large attic room over the garage with a private bath, closet, and away from the main living space. There is a day bed with pop up trundle and a double bed .. and just in case, a roll-away bed.

I absolutely love the panels on the window. They look so rustic yet classic. Have fun with your house guests!

Susy, your guest bedrooms are fantastic. They are just like I would expect a Maine homestead guest bedroom to look. Yea, to the electric mattress pad. I’ve had one for years. They are the best ever for staying warm in the Winter with out having to pile on the blankets. I don’t really get allot of guests but I have two family members (daughter and grandson) that fill up the extra bedrooms. A few years ago my oldest daughter and her family came to visit and filled up the house with air mattresses when it was time for sleeping. You are right about when guests come, it should be all about conversation and spending time together. I’ve always had the philosophy that bedrooms were made for sleeping and almost all the awake time is spent some where else. A night stand with a garden book or magazine to plant positive thoughts in my head before drifting off to sleep is all I require in the bed room.

I would guess that you and Brian are the best hosts ever. The mix of your two personalities would make for a great place to come visit. I’ve always heard that Maine is a homesteader’s dream come true. However it’s not likely I’ll ever make it to Maine. (big sigh)

Have a great Maine Winter day.

We dont have a lot of overnight company here though we have had some.. Our house is really too small to accommodate overnight guests though at the moment we do have an extra little room set up upstairs and it was used when my parents came to visit this summer and sometimes when my sorta-grands come stay the night.

Oh, the electric mattress pad: such a great invention. We got one last winter and I don’t think we’ll ever go back.

And yes, we have house guests all the time, despite the fact that we live in a 900 sf one-room cabin. There is a pull-out couch and a tiny little loft with an air mattress (and 32-inch ceilings!); they both see lots of action throughout the year. We have a Christmas party every year that routinely sees 5 – 10 people staying the night, spread out over the floor, couch and loft as best they can.

All this is to say: guests are in the lap of luxury at your house! :) You’re right – it’s about the company, good fun, good food, and laughs, far more than it is about the accommodations.

In the summer, more or less constantly (lake front and all). In the winter, not so much. Big surprise, right?

Lovely. We’ve only had a few overnight guests since we’ve been married. If my grandma or cousin stays with us, they sleep in Isaac’s room and then Isaac relocates to our room. It isn’t terribly convenient but I don’t mind. I would love to visit you some time. I hope we get the chance. :)

Yes! We have 4 kids and 2 dogs and we welcome all people big or small and 4 legged creatures…it may not be pretty with many quilts stacked and pillows everywhere, but if you have good coffee and homemade baked goodies…all is delightful! We also always have extra ice skates, snowpants and boots..just in case the woods and pond call..

I don’t have guests stay with me, but I have BEEN a guest in other people’s homes from time to time, and I can testify to the fact that as long as there is a bed and clean sheets, the condition/decor of the guest room is the LAST thing I care about… the conversation and the sharing of good friendship (and good food) are far more important.

I desperately want to turn my outside shed into my studio, so that i can have a guest room. I live in a small cottage and there is so little room. After 7 years living here I’ve never had a single overnight guest. I rarely even get regular visitors, something I’ve been hoping for for a while. I really like how you put your rooms together. They look nice.
