Quote of the Day: E.B. White

January 20th, 2013

“Although winter is still in possession of the land, the days are perceptibly longer. Skating on the frog pond under an early rising moon, I am conscious of the promise of pollywogs under my runners, and my thoughts turn to seeds and the germinal prospect. Snow, which came with a bang at Thanksgiving, is an old story to the little boy now; winter’s charms fade slowly out like the picture of Charlie McCarthy on the back of his sweatshirt. Sear’s Roebuck’s midwinter catalog is shelved in favor of seed catalogs.”

-E.B White – from January 1939 in One Man’s Meat

It’s so true how the seasons are exciting when they are fresh and new, then their newness fades and is soon replaced by excitement for the season to come. While I love winter and have not grown weary of it’s beauty, I’m certainly starting to shift my focus to spring. My gardens are starting to come together in my mind, where I will plant trees and hedges.

It can be hard at times to sit back and truly enjoy this moment in time, it seems as humans we are constantly focused on what lay ahead the possibilities that await. There’s still a lot of winter left and I must restrain my excitement for spring lest it ruin the rest of my peaceful winter!

Are you finding the charm of the current season fading?

It has been so unseasonably cold and dry here in Seattle, that i think everyone is hoping for a little rain soon. We’re used to squalls about this time of year.

Gorgeous photos. What a great time to practice stillness. Here, the temps have been going back and forth, so it’s more difficult to find that balance. Enjoy whatcha got!

I just love E.B.Whit. What a great quote. I feel the same about winter right now. I can already feel spring in the air. I even notice the little extra bit of daylight we get every afternoon since the winter solstice. This is also the time of year when I seem to crave new indoor plants ,If it’s green and lush I want it. Thank goodness for late winter garden shows!

I’m not tired of winter at all. I’m hoping for more snow though to refresh what we have left, because winter without snow is very wearying. I hope to find time today to get out in it for a nice walk with my dogs – there is not enough snow left to ski or snowshoe.

One Man’s Meat has been on my Amazon wish list for a while. Now maybe I’ll be motivated to buy it!

…Your photos are amazing! Just lovely! :o)

…It is wonderful to see someone have an appreciation for each Season. I can’t think of a time in my life when I didn’t love Winter, I do love all the Seasons altho’ Summer has been getting on my last nerve with the scorching temps and drought conditions here as of late. *sigh*shudders*

…This is the time I take refuge inside my home. A time to read, sew, bake and maybe do little organization/touch-up jobs that I put off the rest of the year. We haven’t had much in the way of snow here and we are terribly behind in precipitation levels. We have so much catching up to do since last Summer and the outlook isn’t looking good. Enjoy that snow you two! :o)

…Btw, loved the photos of you both sleigh riding recently! Cute! ;o)

…Beautiful quote & thank you for sharing!

    …Blessings. :o)

I’m still looking forward to another Noreaster before winter starts to wane. There is just something about a heavy snowfall, high winds, and unplowed roads to give that delicious feeling of isolation.

This year, it hasnt seemed much like winter at all (55 & sunny here yesterday) so Im not sick to death of it as I was last year.. Last year was surely the worst for me.. it felt like Spring would never come.. We’ve only had one decent snowfall and it was gone in a few days.. they say there is another headed our way.. Bring it on. :)

Yes! I’m definitely moving my thoughts toward spring, but that’s mostly because we’ve had very spring-like weather for the last few days. I’ll be ready to hunker back down again when winter returns.

It has been a pretty nice winter… but given the freezing cold spell that’s about to hit, I’m definitely ready for spring!
