Eggs
The days are getting longer, it starts to become more noticeable this time of year. I’m not the only one that notices, the chickens do too.
Every week they seem to add another egg to my daily collection. During the darkest days of winter I would find one egg, then there were two daily eggs, then three. Now I’m getting at least four eggs a day and sometimes as many as six.
What are some other things you notice changing as the days get longer?

The male black-capped chickadees are singing (pee-wee pee-wee) and woodpeckers are banging out their territories. I had to shoo a hairy woodpecker off the woodwork on the bay window Sunday afternoon. It’s good to see signs of the coming spring when the high for the day is 9*.

Even with a light running from 4 until 9, my girls backed off from laying a bit. Yesterday I was pleasantly surprised to find 6 eggs. I know I need to remove some of the nonproducers and order chicks in April.
It is nice to have enough light at 5 to clean up the play yards at the kennel and do the chicken and goat chores.

it is -5 here again today…and our sweet girls are still laying! Those hardy MN chickens~ I just love the sunsets now with the extra few minutes of cold beauty…

The Stellar’s Jays are squawking all day and i saw two hummingbirds perched at the feeder a couple days ago. Rumoured around here to be Calliopes, but i haven’t identified them yet myself.
With a couple weeks of below freezing temps, inversion, and no rain…we are ready for spring.

I can’t say that I’m seeing or feeling any benefit of longer days quite yet. Soon, though it will be warm and light enough to be out in the evenings.

My mood improves! I’m so much less motivated when it’s already dark when I get home. Now it’s staying lighter out and I’m already counting down until daylight savings in March…

My mood sours as we approach the hellish season of swamp pants. Yuck.

My male finches are showing their red coloring on their heads now at the bird feeders. I am seeing more gathering of woodpeckers around here now.
We have had a few days of nice warmer air and when you go out in the early morning, the air smells of sping and warm-up earth.
Soon, I will be starting lettuces and spinach in my cold frames. Just got to wait for the ice to melt a little so I can chip it off my frames and set them up.
Have a wonderful warming day.

I haven’t really noticed the days are longer. The kids have been getting tired a little earlier but I think that is due to them not taking naps anymore. Nothing can beat a fresh egg though. I bet your family is really enjoying them.

We are going through a big cold spell this week here, but so far my girls are still laying everyday and have been all winter. I have one chicken who doesn’t give me one everyday, but most of the time I get 4/day.
