The Desk Cat

February 23rd, 2013

It’s no secret that I love cats, we have 4 of them running around Chiot’s Run. Three of them spend time indoors, two exclusively and one is an indoor/outdoor guy. With that many cats running around, it’s hard to be anywhere without one of them being underfoot, underhand, or on your lap.

Even when I’m working there’s often a cat sleeping on my desk, either to my left or behind my computer.

It sure is nice to have such a good paperweight. Of course when decide to sleep on the keyboard and type messages while doing so, that’s not as welcome. They can be pests at time, but in general, we welcome their companionship.

Do your house/garden companions ever get in the way?

I too love cats, one of mine is currently sleeping curled up in the middle of my bed while I am laying precariously on the edge balancing my iPad typing this to you! XxBrenda

Often. With 3 dogs underfoot I frequently complain to my husband that one day he’ll come home and find me on the floor with my head bashed into the wall.

The dogs, of course will all have that innocent “Who Me?” look on their faces.

    Gotta love em though.

The dog is my sous chef in the kitchen waiting for the chance of a taster! My cats are outdoor cats but do come to ‘help’ when I’m gardening. Not that I call rolling around on a seed bed a help or grabbing the garden line. Good company tho :)

YES!!! They’re everywhere I go! And I do love it :) BUT, I could do without them helping me in the garden by “fertilizing” wherever I’m working….

2 cats and 2 dogs complete our family. They are hot water bottle substitutes on the bed, instant vacuums in the kitchen, alarm clock in the morning, and reminders of meal times. There is nothing that compares to coming home to 2 waggy tails and a couple of miows, whether we have been away five minutes or a whole day,
So we forgive them the hair, the occasional sick, the need to be here for them. We committed ourselves to dogs when we had our kids, and never looked back! Cats have always been in our lives.
We are grateful for their sense of order: mice out! And on the desk, I came to an understanding: I knitted Bubble a basket. She parks there now, and we share the space.

Oh yes! Three Great Danes are like perambulating sofas that like to be in the middle of everything! I’m in my 12′ x 12′ office right now and behind me is a veritable carpet of snoozing dogs. I’d have to pole vault my way out! The Danes aren’t so much help as supervision when I’m working outside but the Babydoll sheep are always up to assist with anything vegetative. Unlike the two goats, the sheep respect light fencing around the garden beds so during the day when I’m outside they’re allowed to free range around the homestead. The goats are firmly enclosed since they don’t discriminate between tasty grass, leaves, porch railings and car bumpers!

Our one cat raised the Danes and considers them her friends and snuggle buddies; the dogs give her the respect due a matriarch despite the 180 or pounds between each of them and her.

I like cats, but I like breathing more, and unfortunately, the two are mutually exclusive :(

The dogs, however, don’t so much get in the way as take over – the bed, the couch… :)

And speaking of cats walking on your laptop – apparently, they’ve been interrupting important work for centuries:

Oh for sure, but like you say these things would be so boring without cats or chicken underfoot to keep things entertaining. :)

Have many cats indoors and some outdoors, the latter mostly dump offs from irresponsible idiots. The two kinds never meet, that’s asking for diseases and other pet pests. They are helping me whether indoors or out in the greenhouse and garden. Nice to sleep next to my feet when it’s cold and your lap sometimes. Wouldn’t be without them.

I used to have several cats but no more…..and when this last one shuffles off this mortal coil…..there will be no more….here. I think they are dear but I love the birds more. I like to put out feeders and watch the birds from my window…..Birds are so beneficial. Cats are predators…..and poopers in my garden…..which I can no longer abide. Your kittas are just lovely and I am glad you are able to appreciate them:) I do have a dog however….and she is my constant companion.

All 18 of our cats are outdoor/barn cats though and they do get in the way sometimes when we’re doing outside work!

I have 3 cats now. (I had to have one put down yesterday, big hole in my heart right now.) They are constantly underfoot, laying on whatever I am doing, generally being a pain in the neck, but I cannot imagine them not being here. When they are all gone I don’t know if I will have more due to our lifestyle, but for now it is nice to curl up for a nap or with a good book and have a warm purring cat with me.

We currently have 1 little dog – a mix. She’s our walking area rug. Daisy will get under your feet where you’re sitting so you can rub your feet on her soft fur to get cozy. I think it’s more for her benefit – a free massage! She loves our chickens – wants to play with them. More so now because we recently lost her cat pal – Tootsie. – an indooror/outdoor cat (mostly in!). She came out from under our garden shed one year and had her ever since. Tootsie would follow you everywhere. Great mouser! If she thought you were too far away from her outside, she sit there and meow. You’d have to call her name and she’d come runnin’ and follow you more closely. Never seemed to bother the hundreds of birds we feed here. May have gotten a few through the years, but she concentrated mostly on mice, moles and voles. I’m looking forward to getting another cat – hope the next will have it’s own quirky personality too! So’s Daisy! Just love critters!

I only have one furball but she acts the same way. She doesn’t like when I work from home so she’ll sit next to my keyboard and stare. And she makes it very well known when she wants attention, but I’m a sucker and almost always let her win. Cats are cute and free entertainment, I say.

Our cat follows us around like a dog. He will even sit on an open chair at the dining table hoping for scraps.I can’t imagine life without him.

Get in the way? I would call it more like re-focusing me and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

    Oh yes… yes yes yes…
The big pup, Cecil, he’ll push his cold wet nose under my elbow while I’m trying to work on my illustrations. Working on my website? The paw slings up onto my lap from the little one Charlotte as she tries to pry herself up onto my lap.
Yes, I couldn’t imagine a household without pets. I proudly wear my beige-brown-and-white speckled sweaters to work! :D
