Patiently Waiting
Dexter is patiently waiting for gardening season to arrive. He has been enjoying some outside time, but he much prefers to be outside when I’m around. He likes to follow me around the garden.
I’m with Dexter, I can hardly wait to get out and start digging in the soil. At least I have indoor seedlings to tend.
What gardening chores are you most looking forward to?

Harvesting. Especially blueberries and tomatoes.
One for the bucket, two for me….one for the bucket, three for me

I’m beginning this planting season with increased vigor. Being motivated by farm school, I feel that I have a better understanding of what to do. In that sense, I’m enjoying every single step of the process. But I secretly feel giddy just seein’ those seedling emerge.

Two days ago I could have dug some parsnips. Today, I’m not so sure – we’ve had a couple of cold nights. Nonetheless, I’m going to go out today and try. This is what I’m most looking forward to now, but later in the season when parsnips are gone, I’ll be looking forward to grazing in my garden on little orange tomatoes, sugar snap peas, and raspberries. When these are in season I visit my garden a dozen times a day just to walk around and snack!

Transplanting tomato plants. That I have not even started, so that’s a ways off, but I love how tiny and orderly they look when they’re first put in the ground, knowing that in a few months they’ll be enormous and unruly and sagging with the weight of tomatoes. YAY!

I love to plant the seeds. I always do in my bare feet. It’s my most favorite thing to do. I love feeling the warm soil and the smell is heavenly.

This weekend we built five new garden beds (4 feet by 4 feet), and added compost to all of our beds. It felt amazing to get moving and check those tasks of our garden list. The next chore is to put together a specific “when to plant” list.

I love it all!
I was really looking forward to some downtime this winter as the garden really takes up a lot of time. That enjoyment lasted only a couple of weeks before I was ready to be back at “work”! I had to more or less force myself to relax and enjoy the time off.
Now that most of the garden is in, I feel at peace with my days of working in the soil and doing even the most mundane tasks.

Anything. I went out and did some weeding today and it was wonderful!

I still need to order my seeds, but I think my own nervousness is holding me back! I’m afraid I’ll kill everything or not be able to accomplish my lofty gardening goals. Last year I didn’t really do anything in the garden because Isaac couldn’t stand being outside. This year, I’m hopeful that he will be more confident and adventurous.
