Sweet Spring

April 9th, 2013

Dexter (aka Big D) and I have been enjoying spending as much time as possible outside working in the garden. We work until the sun goes down and a chill returns to the air. He’d actually like to stay out much longer, but I make him come indoors when it gets dark.

Yesterday I played hooky from work. It was a beautiful warm day with highs in the mid 50’s. It’s supposed to rain the rest of the week, so I figured I could spend the rainy days getting all my office work finished up. Is there anything better than spending a day in the garden on a beautiful spring day?

What would you consider the perfect temperature for a day in the garden?

Dexter comes across a such a character, The Big D made me chuckle.
We are still waiting for Spring to arrive :( cold North/East winds, frosty nights doesn’t make for good gardening vibes.
I’m hoping for some perfect warm, still days to crack on with a very neglected garden.

If ONLY Spring would arrive here in Alberta! The last 2 nights have been -14C and we still have a fair bit of snow on the ground… Inside our unheated greenhouse, we do have tiny seedlings just starting to emerge, though :) I LOVE working in the garden when the weather is between 20 and 25C but we need to get above 0C, first, lol!

You think like me in springtime- rain = work, sunshine = garden!

Susy, the rain from storm Walda is here in Nebraska. The prediction here is not for snow like other parts of Nebraska but it’s still preventing me from getting my garden beds prepped for planting. I got my rain water catch system setup just in time. Hopefully, at week’s end my 400 gallon garden water storage tank will be full and ready to water my Urban Garden plants. It takes about two inches of rain to fill the tank.

To answer your question about the perfect day. It would be about 70 degrees with sunshine and a slight breeze to cool the heat from the sunshine. I like humidity on a spring day just to bring out the earthy smell from the damp soil. Yesterday wasn’t too bad here. It was about 75 with almost 100 percent humidity and overcast. Since we just had rain the ground was damp and released the smell of life coming into the grass.

Have a great day before the rains come.

Especially after a long, hard winter. We spent the whole Saturday a couple weeks ago outside FINALLY doing some yard work. We were all sore and got blisters but I didn’t care- it was just so nice to get outside. I’m sure I won’t be so excited about blisters and hard work in the middle of the hot summer but right now? I’ll take it with a smile.

I’m blessed by the climate here; it’s been “gardening weather” since January. I prefer cooler days (sub-80’s) because I can work up a good sweat and not be miserable. Once we break 90’s I’m a shade gardener.

It was so warm yesterday that it was too hot to work in the high tunnels as long as I’d planned. Today it snowed. Winter is acting like a three year old, kicking and screaming because it can’t have candy, refusing to go quietly.

My perfect day is 65*, the air is dry, the evenings chilly. October in Maine.

For me, the perfect gardening weather is about 55-70 and sunny…. No hotter and no colder.. ;)

Perfect for me would be 60-70 (or less is fine).

70’s. Perfect spring gardening temperatures. We’re still acclimated to the colder weather, so when the mercury hits those numbers, it’s such a treat!
