The Evening Walk

April 13th, 2013

Mr Chiots and I have always enjoyed taking evening walks. We’ve always enjoyed it, we loved walking the streets of the various cities, towns, and neighborhoods we’ve lived in. Here in Maine, we’ve been hiking the different trails on our property.

Typically we leave about an hour before dusk and try to make it back before dark. The other night it was pretty dark when we were on our way back, we had lingered watching the sunset over the wetlands.  On our way back, you could only really see Lucy when she was standing on the snow.  We always have flashlights just in case we end up staying out too long.

There’s something so relaxing about walking at this time of night, it’s certainly a great way to leave work behind and relax before bed!

What’s your favorite activity for relaxing in the evening (other than gardening of course)?

I enjoy doing evening chores. Once the chickens, goats and rabbits are fed and watered, I have a sense of accomplishment. All is well on the farmette and I can start winding down for bed.

Me too. Counting heads and closing the door is the beginning of me being in for the night.

An evening swim or paddle in the lake (when it’s warm enough).

Susy, you are so lucky to be so far out in the country that it actually gets dark at night. I rarely get to experience that. The urban living doesn’t encourage the true darkness at night. There is a street light that shines into my bedroom window. Even during the Spring and Fall months when I can sleep with the window open, the window shade must be pulled down on the closed part of the window. I relish the times when I can gaze at the night time sky and remember just how awesome the stars are.

Have a great stroll through the star lit sky.

We love evening walks also. My favorite are the times when there is a heavy snowfall and no cars/no plows have been through the neighborhood. We bundle up and take the dogs, they love it, we love it….sometimes it will be very late when we decide to go.

I’ve been reading more in the evening. I’ll be visiting one of my daughters in Boston next weekend and hope to learn the basics of knitting, and make that my evening entertainment.

I like to sit on the balcony with a cup of coffee, look down at our little pond in the woods and listen to the spring peepers.

We enjoy a couple of ways to unwind – We love to sit by our fire ring and just listen to the evening sounds. We’ve even done it in the rain – umbrellas and all! We really love sitting on our porch – the northwest corner especially. We can watch the birds around the feeders, enjoy our flower beds, and watch the sun set over the creek line. The proch area has become a little sanctuary with hanging baskets, container plants, window boxes and our favorite – hummingbird feeders! So our porch swing and rockers get a lot of use for at least 3 seasons!

Reading a book (lately lots of gardening books!), preferably with a cup of tea.

I’m definitely jealous that you have trails on your property! I can only dream! There are a couple of empty lots I’d like to explore around here, I’d have to ask the owners if I could walk through there. We drove by a huge property for sale that looked awesome today on our way to pick up the bees…I could only dream!
