Chick Update
The chicks are doing really well, they are now outside 100% of the time. Dailon built a movable chicken coop, following the instructions in the back of Harvery Ussery’s The Small-Scale Poultry Flock. So far we like it, there roosts inside and nesting boxes with outside access. We don’t really need to worry about eggs any time soon, these chickies are just about 5 weeks old.
I love that they’re roosting and acting like little tiny chickens. They scratch, dust bathe, chase insects and they are even establishing a pecking order. It is nice to have them be fully outside and more or less taking care of themselves.
It has been fun to watch these little guys/gals grow up, we’re looking forward to the upcoming months to watch their transformation into teenage chickens.
What’s your favorite animal to watch grow up?

We had one hen go broody, and all the little chicks are now hatching. We love watching them follow their momma round and learn all the chickens things ;)

I love chooks. They’re my all-time favourite animal. We too have had a silky go broody and hatch botht he eggs she sat on. One needed a rescue run this morning though – found it had hatched sometime during the night and was icy cold (we’re in winter here in Australia) but still alive if barely. I brought the poor thing inside and whilst hubby rigged up a warm light and temporary nesting box I snuggled the little one into somewhere warm. It perked up very quickly although doesn’t seem to have much use of its legs. It’s back with mum now with the name Tenacity and I’m hoping we find it more mobile and able to keep up with its sibling in the morning.

Any animal is sweet to watch develop. Your chicks are darling.

I think my favorite is watching a litter of German Shepherd puppies grow through the stages from birth to leaving for new homes. I’m enjoying my own 3.5 month old GSD puppy this spring. Puppies are probably my favorite because I spend so much time with them and training them. I know them much better than my other animals.
