Popeye Would Be Happy

Last week all the spinach that I planted many months ago started to bolt. So I harvested all of it, many, many pounds.

All of it was rinsed, cooked, and packed into small containers in the freezer for winter soups and sauces.

What didn’t make it into the freezer was fed to the pigs, they LOVED it.

    Only salad leaves and chard. The weather is not doing us any favours!

    Baby Spinach. And I should have got a strawberry but the dog beat me to it!

    Spinach is long since done for us. This week it is carrots and beets. And very soon I have at least 1 kholrabi to pull. SO excited about that. I just discovered how much I like them and now I will be harvesting my first one.

    I cut a Napa cabbage, tatsoi. boc choi and tatsoi, and pulled a kohlrabi for last night’s stir fry supper. I found one tiny wild strawberry that was delicious!

    Lettuce, lettuce and more lettuce. Also garden sorrel, a little spinach, herbs, and lots of wild greens like purslane, violets, wild sorrel and wood sorrel, etc. that I use to round out the salads until my garden is growing better. Oh, and radish, and kale growing in my compost pile, and some greenhouse tomatoes from Beth’s Farm Stand in Warren…

    I harvested and froze a large batch of lambs quarters last week. This is probably my favorite green – it tastes delicious, and doesn’t cook down nearly as much as spinach or other cultivated greens so I get more for my effort. I just let a few plants in the corner of my garden go to seed each year and it feeds me the next one!

    mangoes, mangoes, and lots of mangoes. This is the beginning of the mango season here in the Caribbean. Picked a few fruits and nuts of the Cashew tree on Monday, Close to the kitchen, herbs, arugula, komatsuna, mustard, amaranth, purslane and some beet tops.

    I am envious of your spinach! That looks amazing! We are harvesting peas, basil, beet greens, and cayenne peppers from the greenhouse and lots of herbs for tea making and herbed butters from the front gardens. Strawberries are few and far between, but thank goodness they are coming along!

    I can never grow spinich no matter how hard I try. We are eating salad greens and a little bit of chard. My chard doesn’t grow that well either where I live.

    This week….sorrel, peas, chard, strawberries, radishes, mustard, wild onions, shallots, elderberry flowers, lettuce, herbs and lambs quarters.

    Lettuce and baby kale and swiss chard and lots of herbs. The first peas look like they will be ready in about a week and I spied a tiny broccoli head a few days ago!

    We are eating lots and lots of strawberries. We watered more than we ever have last summer and fall, and are being rewarded with much larger berries this year. We’re also harvesting rhubarb, radishes, spinach, and herbs (tarragon, chives, thyme, parsley, and oregano). We’re excited to see a few blueberries on one of the bushes we put in last year.
