It’s Tart!
Yesterday, Mr Chiots and I picked sour cherries at my mom’s house. She planted new trees a few years ago after her old one in the back blew over in a storm.
We picked most of them, totaling about a pound. I whipped up a batch of my grandma’s famous pie crust and made a slab pie.
Mr Chiots happily enjoyed a slice with ice cream last night for a snack. Sour cherries are one of my most favorite fruit, hopefully next year we’ll be adding a few trees to our garden.
What’s your favorite fruit?

It’s usually whatever is in season and I can pick fresh. I think it’s a toss up between fresh raspberries, and peaches. I find it difficult to eat fruit from the grocery stores and really prefer eating it fresh not frozen or canned.

There are too many fruits to have A FAVORITE ONE. I love all freshly picked almostly tree ripped fruits example pineapple, paw paw(papaya),sapodilla, mangoes and the list goes on. .Beautiful cherries for some fruit syrup for pancakes..

Do I have to pick just one? I agree with Kathi’s sentiment. When we lived down South I discovered what a peach is supposed to taste like. It’s strawberry season right now and I’m gorging myself with them, but as I walk around the garden to check on the tiny green plums or raspberries, apples, etc, my mouth starts to water.

I really love the cherries that come from WA but in the last few years they have been lacking in taste. Guess my next favorite is strawberries fresh grown here.

Jennifer Fisk, if you can get to an orchard, try to get out and pick your own. They always taste better! Cherries are ‘on’ in the Hood River/White Salmon area, probably also in the Chelan area.

Is your title a reference to this week’s “Mad Men”? I’m fond of a bunch of fruits, but am looking forward to the alpine strawberries that are growing now and having a bunch of cherries in the future – North Star, Carmine Jewel, and Hansen’s bush cherries. All of those are still maturing, but maybe next year — I hope to get enough to dehydrate them for snacks through the year.

Actually no, it’s a reference to Of Mice & Men (particularly the audio version read by Gay Sinese).

Blueberries
I buy twice as many as I need in summer and freeze half. It’s now winter and I’m still eating blueberries.

I guess my all time favorite is the little wild strawberries that grow in fields and along the roadsides. They don’t taste anything like the ones we grow in our gardens or especially those from the supermarket! I’ve never even found enough to pick a handful – maybe a dozen at a time at the most, which makes them extra special! As to ones I can grow in my garden and yard, strawberries (Sparkle – my all time favorite), and raspberries. Wild Maine blueberries are also great, but I buy these – 30-40 pounds every August, and we freeze most of them and make juice (which I freeze) from some.

I love peaches too, but the ones we can grow here in Maine just aren’t as nice and juicy as I like. It’s the one fruit that actually tastes better from a store!

This post just took me to my childhood home in Wayne County Ohio. I remember picking sour cherries in our back yard and my mom making the best pie ever from my great-grandmother’s recipe. It was a much needed moment of happiness. Thank you!
