Friday Favorite: Easy Bake Ovens
When I was a little, the Easy Bake Oven was one of my favorite toys. I’m sure that doesn’t come as a surprise since you know I love to cook.
Yesterday, we got out my mom’s Easy Bake and baked up a storm with my two older nieces. It was my sister’s (their mom) birthday, so they wanted to make her a cake. Happy Birthday WENDY!
My parents had to choke down many an easy bake cake, piled high with frosting. It’s nice that the tradition remains alive. Even my mom’s neighbor received her own individual cake.
Did you have an Easy Bake Oven when you were a kid?

No, as we couldn’t afford one. My baking started by standing on a chair stirring cookies and eating dough when mom wasn’t looking. :) Didn’t get our girls one as hubby said it took too much electricity and we couldn’t afford the mixes anyway. They learned to bake the same way I did. Our 28 yr. old son bakes mulberry/bl. raspberry pies, buying the crust, but good pies. I would never buy any for the grandkids as the mixes have lots of chemicals and we avoid those things. But cute cake for your sis.

Actually we don’t use the mixes either. My mom has developed small scale recipes for them so they just use flour, water, etc. Plus she god the oven at Goodwill so it was only a few dollars. The electric used for cooking the cakes is actually very small too, only a few pennies.

When I started showing interest in cooking, my Mom taught me how to use the real stove. I don’t even know if there were Easy Bakes over 60 years ago.

Ooh, Easy Bake ovens are the best. I remember my dad helping me at the dinner table make llts of pans of brownies. Not only did we have the same appliances growing up, but from the photo it appears we had the same plates too. Love that pattern! Hope you have oodles more fun with your families and a safe trip back.

But of course!! I loved that little oven….I had 3 sisters so we cooked like fiends:) I do remember the tiny treats weren’t particularly tasty but we didn’t care…..A step up from mud pies! If I recall correctly that Christmas was the one we got tinker toys too…..We had a very creative several months:) Thanks for the memory jump today:)

I had a Suzy Homemaker oven, which resembled a full-size oven in that you opened the door to slide the cake in. Still baked with a light bulb, though.

We had one back in the late 80’s/early 90’s when I was a kid… but I don’t actually remember anything turning out! Ha!
