We Have Ducklings

July 6th, 2013

You probably remember me mentioning that our lady duck went broody about a month ago and starting sitting on a nest of eggs.  I’ve been trying to check on the nest when she takes her foray out for some grass each day.  Yesterday we peeked in the nest and spotted this:

DUCKLINGS!  There were 5 that had hatched and a few other eggs that were pipped (update: this morning when I checked there were 8 ducklings).  In total there were 12 eggs in the nest, it will be interesting to see how many ducklings we end up with.

I can hardly wait to watch these little guys grow up, they’re so stinking cute!  Ducks are definitely my favorite fowl.

What would you consider your favorite bird?

The kind I eat. I don’t like birds much.

We just bought 2 Rouen ducklings, and I have to say that they are so much more docile and calm than chickens. I like the calm much better, so right at this moment, I am leaning toward ducks. :) Ducklings are adorable with their waddle.

Our Muscovy ducks are much quieter and more reserved than chickens. They barely make a sound.

We want to get Muscovy ducks, but they are pretty hard to come by where I live.

I have heard a few instances where Muscovy ducks get aggressive and attack? I’m sure any type of fowl can attack, but I’ve never heard you say that they are aggressive. I’m still on the fence about ducks…yours are so darn cute! Congrats on your babies!

A few of our males got aggressive, but you just need to pay attention while you’re around them. Any male animal has the potential to be aggressive I think. We have slaughtered them all except our most docile male. Our rooster was much more aggressive than our ducks.

We too are awfully partial to our ducks:) Yours are darling. Although we just had another batch of baby rabbits and they may be the mostest cutest!

I favor the ducks. The three I have now are the most nervous ducks I’ve ever had so I didn’t let them get broody. The next ones will be hand raised.

    …Duck Nuggets! ;o)

…We’ve had ducks before but unfortunately they got taken by a fox. We couldn’t get them rounded up to save our lives and they weren’t tame at all. We have three that visit here from a nearby farm and I’m hoping they’ll stick around and hatch babies.

    …So cute aren’t they?

    …Enjoy your weekend!

    …Blessings. :o)

We lost two of our lady ducks to a fox, it’s tough if they don’t have a pond to retreat to. Our remaining ducks are now safe behind an electric fence.

I am not sure I have a favorite bird…I have several I like. We live in an amazing area and we see eagles and hawks everyday, I never get tired of watching them soar. We have a couple varieties of hummingbirds, they are incredible little birds. One of my favorite birds to listen to is a Canyon Wren, however they do not live in our area. Of course, my little flock of hens, not only do they provide us with eggs, the are a great source of entertainment.

Enjoy your ducklings, they are so cute!

They are just too cute. I want to snuggle them and cuddle them, I totally admit it. Are they campbells? Have a great day!

We had ducks years ago and I love them, too. Watch out for Daddy Ducks, not so nice to the babies.
