Friday Favorite: The Meadow
We have a large grassy area that might be considered a lawn. Since we just have a small push mower, we left most of it to grow up into a meadow. It’s been beautiful, filled with wildflowers of all colors, shapes and sizes and a wide variety of grasses as well.
We’re not the only ones enjoying this, we have a doe that’s been grazing regularly down below the house. She’s been coming out and grazing every week. We noticed her first a few weeks ago while she was still very pregnant. She’s since had her fawn, which we’ve heard bleating down in the woods.
What’s your favorite wildflower?

Beatutiful!!!!!!!!!!!1This reminds me of the gauva pasture we grew up with. Lots of open space with grasses, flowers and fruit trees that my great grand father planted. My brothers and sisters along with my uncle’s kids would visit the pasture every Sunday after to collect the ripe gauva and enjoy the life. We took the sheep and donkey along to graze. I love all wild flowers, no favorite one.

We let a 1/2 of an acre of our two go to meadow, after we planted some birch trees in the back. We are right in the village on Main Street, and it got a lot of people talking.
8 years later, it is beautiful, the fall asters are just coming in, and all we do is go by and a dig up small saplings and shrubs and keep it open.
The bees love it!

It’s too hard to choose just one! I’m a wildflower person – I just love them. I’ve never gotten into growing flowers in my garden because I never like them as much as the wild ones.
Of the common wildflowers, anemone because they mean spring is finally here, and maybe black eyed susan, which are so cheery and I can see now as I type out of my window by my desk. For uncommon ones, either calypso orchid or one flowered wintergreen, but these are rare and I’ve yet to see either one in Maine (though they are supposed to grow here – I wish I knew where!).
Lucky you, having a deer that comes so close to your house so you can watch her. It’ll be fun when she brings her fawn.

I have seasonal favorite wildflowers. Bluebonnets at the beginning of spring as well as trout lilies just as spring is emerging, in the summer I love Mexican hats and Indian blankets. In fall, the sweeping views of goldenrod melt me!

At one time, I had my bank growing lawn but then the chickens free ranged. For a couple of years it has been weedy but this spring Daisy’s grew in great numbers. It was beautiful but now they are dying. I wonder if something else will bloom there before the first frost.
I hope your doe confines her grazing to your meadow and not your garden. Don’t know if you have Hostas but they are a deer favorite.

I love the orange milkweed/butterfly plant (asceplias tuberosa). It has started coming up along with the more common pink variety by the side of the lake across the street. No monarch caterpillars this year to eat it, though. At least not yet. Something with the spring weather in texas, I think, either too dry or too wet and it disrupted their migration pattern from Mexico to Minnesota.

I love the wild daisy, the black eyed susans, the bluebells, the butterfly weed….all are beautiful….I have been allowing a large part of our acreage including our lawn to turn back into meadow…..I have a man who mows yards for a living….living next door…..We perplex him…..And when my best friend stopped by recently and saw my goats staked out in what should be my “lawn” munching happily away….she was taken aback…..It is hard sometimes/oftentimes swimming upstream…..from everyone else in my world. Your meadow is so beautiful….the deer is as well….Here the deer are numerous…too numerous….and we have lost many a vehicle to deer…..Alas they have lost a good bit of their charm.

Being from Colorado, my favorite wildflower is the columbine! Although the columbine is our state flower, it’s like the abominable snowman, you rarely see one here, haha.
