Rainbow is Right

August 28th, 2013

I must say, there’s nothing quite like color in the vegetable garden. When I decided to launch the 5×5 Challenge, I quickly settled on the Rainbow Kitchen Collection from Renee’s Garden Seed. Seeing bright, colorful vegetables in the garden is an amazing sight.

This week I spotted the first yellow tomato in the 5×5 Garden. I must admit, the first one I spotted was quickly snagged from the vine and eaten. This photo is of the second one, which I have been wanting to eat, but decided I should wait until I got a photo.

The yellow summer squash are coming on as well, we’ve been enjoying them for breakfast.

When it comes to vegetables you can find them in a wide variety of colors. It really does add so much interest and beauty to a garden to have as many different colors as you can.

Which is your favorite color of vegetable?

The Royal Burgundy bush bean is the most lovely deep purple color!! Not burgundy at all. I’ve been picking them all week in my CSA garden and they make me smile while I work!

If I have a pick a color, I would say purple. It’s such a striking contrast from all the green. I like to grow purple cabbage, beans, this year I’m trying a purple podded pea and brussel sprouts. Tomatoes come in such a wide range of beautiful colors, having a bowlful of rainbow tomatoes on the counter makes my day!

Hmmmm, the color that looked the best for me this year was the yellow squash. It came from the volunteer plant and looked very colorful among the plush green foliage of the vine. It also tasted quite good.

    Have a garden colorful day.

Reds or purples. It’s always so exciting when the peppers and tomatoes reach that perfect red, but I sure love the rich glossy purple of eggplant, too!
