Finally, Almost Finished

September 18th, 2013

It was very early this spring that I settled on a layout for the potager behind the house. There was one small problem, I had planted my garlic in one corner last fall. That meant that I couldn’t finish one of the walkways in the garden.

All summer it’s been bugging me because it looked incomplete. This past week, I finally finished the last walkway!

My plan is to keep expanding this garden, surround it with either rock walls or a boxwood hedge and put a greenhouse at the end of the walkway that starts right off the back door (which is the path below). I’m also going to add a composting area behind a perennial border on the upper side of the greenhouse.  The walkways may also paved in bricks.

There’s something nice about finally finished something you started in the spring. There are so many more things to do, but it’s nice to officially check something off the to-do list!

Have you recently finished up any garden tasks you started back in the spring?

Susy, I have many plans for my garden as well. The big plan is to accomplish part of the plan every year. How much I finish depends on the weather and other life issues. It used to frustrate me that I wasn’t getting enough done but I’ve learned that things in life don’t always travel at the speed of our thoughts. When the year ends and a review is done of what has been accomplished through out the year, the total yearly view shows that much has been done even though it hasn’t been what I thought would be completed in my mind. I wouldn’t have it any other way.

    Have a great potager day.

Looks nice but I ahve neither time or energy to make fancy gardens so mine are just reg. raised beds that produce very well in spite of being boring beds. I hate wasting space anyway and just rows of raised beds is very simple and easy to care for. Mow in between and you got easy gardens.

Unfortunately I have a lot of unfinished garden tasks for the year. It was so wet in my area this past Spring, I lost potatoes and tomatoes right off the bat. I also didn’t end up with any squash or cucumbers. The weeds are having a field day! We had such high temps that when I got home from work, it was way to hot to be out there, and when it wasn’t hot, it was wet and mucky! You get the picture. Love the look of your garden ~ that’s a lot of hard work. If I may ask though, “how do you keep weeds under control on walkways”..and throughout yoru garden for that matter??? The last picture looks like sawdust on the walkway. We tried a couple inches of that one year ~ still got weeds, but with shallow roots that were easy to pull. But I guess it has to be done on a regular basis. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

It’s actually some white cedar chips given to me by the neighbor. I haven’t had too much trouble with weeds, though it needs another layer added on top.

As for keeping weeds under control – mulch. I mulch heavily in fall with chopped leaves and around plants throughout the year.

Your potager is lovely! It’s tricky to decide on a design and start implementing it. I’m always afraid my vision won’t match the reality. Yours looks beautiful. Our poor potager is patiently awaiting a good clean up from me and the switching over to fall crops, as are the beds in the big kitchen garden. So much to do, but instead I’ve spent last night and today nursing my poor youngest who broke his arm last night. I teased him that he did it on purpose to get out of helping with weed pulling! (Darn that soccer collision!) He’s feeling better, because he actually laughed at me. ;-) Can’t wait to see the beautiful food you’ll harvest from the potager! Enjoy!

I really enjoy seeing the planning and design process that others go through. It is such an inspirational process that provides such great tips.
