One Year

September 19th, 2013

Yesterday marked our one year anniversary of moving to Maine.  We moved the Wednesday before the Common Ground Fair.  Mr Chiots drove up on Wednesday and I drove up on Thursday.  If you remember, I stayed in Ohio an extra night because Dexter went MIA the night before our scheduled departure.  If you missed that story read this post. Amazingly, I never posted photos of our moving, which I should because we had a great way of packing our truck.

We left our little cottage in Ohio behind, the house we’d fixed up and all the gardens that I’d spent 12 years cultivating…

It’s hard to believe that it’s been a year and yet it seems like we’ve been here forever. We’ve made lots of new friends and the gardens are starting to take shape ever so slowly, mostly in my mind. We’re definitely glad we ended up exactly where we are!

If you could move anywhere – where would you go?

Idaho. Not sure if that will ever happen, but… that’s where. :)

One year in Maine! Nice. Does seem like more than a year to me, too! You guys have done a great job settling in there, making it home.

…Oh I do agree, you must do a post on your move. Judging from the photos it looks as if you would have great advice and some tips too. :o)

…Congratulations on your one year Maine anniversary! It doesn’t seem as if its been a year, the time does fly doesn’t it?

…I loved your lil’ cottage back in Ohio but for some reason it just seems that you two have found “home”. There seems to be an overall feeling of joy and belonging in your posts since you’ve moved to Maine, like this is where your soul belongs. :o)

    …Vermont. :o)

    …Peace & blessings.

I think I’d choose Maine or Vermont. I love the winter, my husband, not so much. He’d have us moving to New Mexico! Not gonna happen! I think we’ll just stay right here in RI!

Arizona high desert. Dry but cold, relatively unpopulated, near my family.

Unless this house burns down or something, though, never gonna happen.

Congratulaitons on your one year anniversary. You have certainly done a lot of very rewarding garden development in that time.

In my dreams I would love to live in either Vermont/Maine, which I have read about and imagined for years or BC Canada, where I skiied for a month and fell in love with. As it would mean a hemisphere change I think it will be staying in my imagination ;)

I do love the way you moved all those bins and boxes. Movable shelves, brilliant!

Congarts on your one-year anniversary in Maine. I would have to agree with the other commenters..you both look so content, Maine is where you belong. If I could move anywhere it would be mid-coast Maine. That’s where my Great Grandfather was from and it feels like home. I love the people, the landscape and the organic minded nature. Have a wonderful time at the Common Ground Fair this weekend. My body will be here in Oregon but my heart will be in Unity!

We seriously discussed emigrating to New Zealand a few years ago… Didn’t end up pursuing it as we both had elderly parents at the time, now that I have a horse I’m not sure I’d want to sell him to move abroad. I wouldn’t want to move anywhere else in this country, I currently have no neighbours & am surrounded by farm land….it would have to be somewhere v special!

We’ve discussed New Zealand and the US Virgin Islands. I’m in Ohio, so is my immediate family, so right here is where I want to stay for now.

Montana – we love the mountains, and Yellowstone and Glacier parks. We go at least once a year. We love the climate. We’re always a little sad to return to the heat and humidity of home in the Deep South.

Nice job packing the truck – not a bit of space left unfilled!

    A year flies by!

I’d move to Big Pine Key, Florida. Or back to Florida in general.

Or I’d be ok with a small hamlet tucked away near the AT in North Carolina or Virginia, or Maine especially. But, I don’t do winter so that creates a problem. ;)

Your all’s was the very first blog I had ever read several years ago. My husband had been badgering me for some time to get on the internet….I would love it!… he said…As it happens I do….You had asked shortly after I had been following you all what books we were reading and I mentioned. “Main Farm” and you were excited and let me know that you too were wanting to read that particular book….I recall being fascinated that somewhere out there was a sort of kindred spirit:) I have since read several books regarding Maine…including, “A Year In The Maine Woods.” I have always pined for Maine…and am so thrilled for you and Brian to not just talk about or blog about….but to make it a reality for the two of you….I think you have found your little piece of heaven….As for me….I actually think Prince Edward Island may be the only place that could lure me from where I am now:)

I’ve always wanted to live in Montana, over the last few years I’ve wanted to live someplace like Maine or Oregon or Washington State where i could live in the mountains and be able to see the ocean too.

Somewhere I could have 100 acres and a home in the middle of it with a house, barn and, outbuildings. Where I can hear nature and not my neighbors’ dogs for 18 hrs. vehicles without mufflers and those idiots who stomp the accelerater to go down the road a mile. I would like to stay in Ohio as my family is here, but for those things I’d certainly be very tempted. Nature not folks who try to destroy nature.
